Basically... People have a problem with anything, any state or condition that doesn't mirror therefore confirm the correctness and superiority of their own.
The media and advertising like to try and appeal to everything all at once. Over eating and fashon... and everyone knows what happens when you try and please all of the people all of the time... What is strange to me is why people still insist on basing their personal beliefs and preferences on anything the media says or dictates it is intellectually counterintuitive to follow any trend? Normally people shun contradictive conclusions? They sneek in below the radar on a subconscience level... and make half of everyone hate half of everyone else and never get caught with their hands in the cookie jar somehow? We should stop listening to commercials and all start learning to accept one another for who we are and respect each different level of self acceptance and expression.
People would become a lot healthier from that alone...
Skinny people like to buzz on and on in your ear about how fat is unhealthy... (see the first answer above) When in reality, what makes you happy is what makes you healthy. The rest, is opinion, based on a like minded group trolling around bullying and judging everyone else that doesn't agree to follow their lead.
Morbidly obese is unhealthy...
Nothing wrong with a fat ***! There is a HUGE difference. About 100 lbs worth to be exact...

Just because most people have a weight problem doesn't make it healthy or acceptable. It's still a severe burden on your body and should be socially unacceptable. People need to get off their bums and get out and do something. People need to stop eating out and eating pre-packaged foods loaded with fat, calories, and sodium. Being fat is NOT okay.
Being underweight isn't a good thing either, and the modeling industry is starting to promote healthier images. Runways in Spain are banning models with a BMI under 18 from walking the catwalk. I do believe others are following suit. Honestly, I don't know many people (if any) who think that being underweight is okay, either. Some people are genetically dispositioned to be very thin. I have a friend who has 2 kids and wears a size 2 still. She cannot gain weight. She has tried, and just can't. I think society as a whole is starting to move towards obtaining a happy medium, but it will be a while before it truly happens.

Being overweight is a condition of abnormal or excessive fat in the body to the extent that it
may have a negative effect on your health. By calculating the Body Mass Index (BMI), we can
tell whether or not a person is overweight.
BMI = __weight in kg__
(height in metres)²
The ‘healthy’ range is 18.5 – 25. Overweight people score 25 - 30 and obese people, over 30.
These cut-off points are not absolute and people with high muscle mass (such as body
builders) may have a high BMI without being overweight.
Being overweight is the result of an energy imbalance where energy intake has been greater
than the energy use over a period of many years. Obesity is rarely caused by a slow
metabolism or hormonal problems. An excess of the wrong food and a lack of exercise are
not the only causes of this imbalance. Other factors have also been associated with obesity:
Shortly... being overweight is abnormal cause it could get some individuals close to danger.........

Your college isn't representative on the final inhabitants of united statesa.. about 60% of people are overweight or overweight. a lot of those are African individuals and Latinos, yet there's a severe variety of whites who're overweight too. Being overweight is right now correlated with socioeconomic status, so undesirable, uneducated human beings have a tendency are more suitable likely to be overweight. that is likely why human beings at your college are slender and toned. also, human beings have a tendency to get more suitable even as they grow old. college scholars many times spend more suitable time exercising consultation than operating adults.

Being underweight is only good for people who are being photographed and on the screen. As they say, the camera adds ten pounds.
For the rest of us, we should find our ideal weight and try to stick to it. I know I should be around 170 and NOT the 140 those medical charts say. Unfortunately, I need to lose some weight to get down to 170.
Yes, we need exercise. Our life style, though, does not encourage it. Too many of us work in cubicles and are kept away from natural sunlight. The only food we get is prepackaged or fast food. It's a wonder that more of us haven't turned into mushrooms.

Being underweight isn't considered more acceptable. The health risks associated with it are much more dramatic and it is taken much more seriously than being overweight. Being over weight is more common because it's much easier to do and sadly it does seem to be being accepted as normal. There are specialist shops around to cater for larger people, try being a size 5 foot 7 and a size 8 and see what you can find to fit. (not that I have that problem personally!)

I think the more fat the general population becomes, the more obsessed they become with dieting. Look at all the diet books and magazines out there. Thus, the more they worship thinness as the unattainable goal... and models need to be the elite, and epitomise our ideals... celebrities are supposed to idolised and admired, so they have to be what we want to be... and they just keep on pushing it, getting thinner and thinner the more obsessed we all become with losing weight ourselves. Now everyone seems to be fighting back, like "hey, we all want to be thin but that's just toooo much". It's all very strange.

the 'normal' size is pushed on us by the media and the fashion industry and celebrities. There is a happy medium in there somewhere and for each person that is different. I say be who you are at the weight that your body is suited for. Meaning eat right and exercise. there is way to much emphasis on how we look and not enough on how healthy we are. You can't tell me that those pencil thin models in are any healthier than those that are morbidly obese.

It's healthier to be slim, but our environment of convenience and ample, tasty food is killing us. We evolved in an environment of too little food, and you had to work hard to get it. Now we can have all the food we want, and don't even have to get out of our chair to change the TV channel. People just can't adapt-it took millions of years of evolution to get us where we are now, and now suddenly the envioronment has changed drastically. Even our pets are fat.
Slim is in because it is hard to achieve. In earlier times, overweight was attractive, because only the rich could afford enough food and leisure time to get there.
