If my daughter whines, I simply tell her- "If you have something important to say- than you will stop whining and talk to me in a normal tone of voice". If she continues to whine- I will sit her in time out and explain to her that whining is unexceptable and that I am ready to listen to her when she is ready to talk like a big girl. Always stay consistant. Now, my daughter will whine occasionally and then she catches herself and corrects it immediately. No child wants to sit in time out

You can break a child out of whining by first checking the possibilities of why the child is whining then after making sure the child is comfortable in the areas you can make better and he/she is still whining take the baby to see the doctor. The problem may very well be beyond your reach (ex. an ear infection or etc.)

Don't get/give into the child what he/she is whining about. Ignore the negative behavior. That is only telling them if they whine enough they will get what they want. Also tell the child your will not do anything until he/she can calm down and ask nicely. Sometimes I would leave my son sitting on his bed. I would tell him when he can ask for something the right way he can come and talk to me. Never give in to it. My son is eight now and he doesn't whine or lose his temper. He knows he will not get anything out of me acting that way. Good luck to you

i have an almost 3 year old who has had this problem as well. what i've started doing is to tell him that he's a big boy and needs to use his words. and that i can't understand him when he's whining. and if i can't understand him then i can't help him out. i don't help him out until he tells me with words and no whining. sometimes its really hard. ive just had to become even more patient. he still whines but the problem is getting a little better. good luck! whining is very irritating!

Dear Kitikat,
Have you have seen anyone on Nanny 911 or Supernanny spank or hit a child? Umm didn't think so.
By the way the phrase you are quoting is more accurately translatesd as "Spare the staff, spoil the child". Ever seen a shepherd beat their flock? Nope.

Oh yeah I can see ignoring a child is way better then a swat on the butt........... Oh please. Since you dont believe in spanking, I guess you will have to deal with the whining until they are done with it, they get away with it now soooooooo, i would say it should end oh about 19-20 years old, you know when they move out and have to face the real world.

Ignore the whining -- its really hard I know but if the kid doesn't get what she/he wants by whining they'll start trying other methods just make sure they know what to do other than whining so they don't start doing other negative things to get attention. My niece will whine for an hour and eventually she'll say please can you do this for me.. or whatever.

we are going thru this right now with our daughter! we tell her that whe doesn't get what she is asking for if she whines, but if she asks nicely we will get it. it is a work in progress, but it has been about a week and getting much, much better! you just have to be consitant and don't give in to the whining! good luck!
