No this is not true. If this happens then something is wrong with that person and it needs to be checked by the doc. Many times dementia like this has a medical cause that can be treated but if it can't then they will diagnose the dementia. It could be alzheimers, or multi-infarct dementia or vascular dementia or something else. The behaviors you described are common but not normal so to speak and the person needs to see the doc.

Yes that can happen. Older people are also more intolerable to others behaviors as well. Especially kids and people who are rude. Some tend to be very cranky when they get older. I guess when life throws alot of curves this could cause some problems for that person.

Yes, I've seen it, often in the people you'd least expect. It's quite startling and disconcerting when people you've depended on all your life to be wise and sane go slightly wacko.
Edit: It might be the result of some underlying pathology, but if so it's an extremely common pathology.

When I was in my early 20s I did volunteer in a nursing home and noticed the same behaviors that you bring up. When I mentioned it to one of the staff members they were very defensive and told me I was imagining it.
