Maybe a salvage yard? Those vans are very popular with restorations, and as such fetch a much higher price than usual. A decent one can go for upwards of 7-8 grand or better depending on condition and # of windows. I would say join up with a local VW club, and start networking. You could always surf http://www.craigslist.org too.

Good luck!

Ok.. I can't remember the name of the place, but there is a salvage yard in Yreka (you can see it northbound on I5.

The guy there has a WHOLE yard full of vw's. Beetles and vans. Some of them were in such good shape that I felt bad about scavenging a few minor parts.

He MIGHT have a good shell .. once you have that you are pretty much home free in the restoration department.

If you are nearby its well worth the personal visit since I KNOW that he is not on the internet,.. (I asked him that when I was there )

good luck
