Is the Titleist Pro-V 1 really all that it's cracked up to be and if so, why?

I have a pretty decent club head speed, and I shoot in the mid 80's. I'm working on working the ball around the green, spinning and the like. Is this ball worth it?

From everything that I've read and heard pros say, unless you're a scratch golfer and really know how to put the ball in an exact location, the ball doesn't matter.
One pro told me that Callaway just held a seminar in our area recently. According to that source, they did a study of every golf ball on the market. Callaway claims there is less than 7 yards difference between the most expensive and least expensive ball on the market. Their claim is the technology and competition between manufacturers is THAT good.
I've got a buddy that has played with nothing but Titleist Pro-V for the last two years. He hasn't bought a single ball. There is a very expensive private club near his house. At night he walks the woods beside the club and picks up lost balls. So Pro-V1's end up in the weeds just like the cheap balls do.

Well, more pro's play it than any other ball, but consider this, the number 1, 2, 3 and 4 players in the world don't play it (Nike, Srixon, Callaway, Callaway).
It's a great ball, no doubt, but may not be good for your game. If you have a relative fast swing, can work the ball and can spin the ball around the green, the Pro V1 or V1x may be for you.

The Pro-V1 is a great ball for lower handicapped golfers. Shooting anywhere in the 80's I would recommend the Srixon Z-URS. It's a great 3 piece ball with incredible feel. Or even a Bridgestone ball may be good for you. Try a few on the greens or on practice rounds and see which feel better. Buy a sleeve of several types and just try them out. Also consider the Nike One Black!

I used the top flight XL but switched to Pro-v1 bcause of the feel you get when putting. The XL has a harder cover thus less feel off the putter. The pro-v1 has a softer cover so I could feel the putts better and determine my distance better. The better player you are the more you can feel the ball off your irons and driver. ( i'm not there yet) I really like the ball. Most of the pros use titleist balls.

Yeah its a good ball. I usually will play it or the nike platium in the summer when the temps are up. In the chill of spring an fall i will play the solo. To me the provs and nikes dont go as far in the cold as the solo. I recently started playing with the bridgestone b330 which requires a strong swing to get the ball to compress. I have done some tests on my own and can tell you that some balls are trash and will wreck your game.

a soft covered, 3 piece ball, like the ProV1 or ProV1x is essential for good consistent scores. Not only does it have much better feel around the greens, it also adds distance, control, and workability off the tee. I would highly recommend using a 3 piece ball like the ProV1 to score lower consistently.

i would say so, the pro-V1 is a good golf ball. there is also a prov1x ball too, the difference is that there is less spin and more forgiveness, so a less experienced player might use that ball

All depends on your skill level. If you have a very slow swing speed no golf ball is gonna matter.
