(Referring to the article)This is stupid....like the troops didn't have a choice to go to war. Most of them want to fight for our country.

Of course I'm American, and yes I know that it's voluntary. It was a very vague question actually but I was just wondering if troops WANT to be there and not just being there because somebody told them to.

The members of the military are all volunteers. And at this point every person in service has either enlisted or re-enlisted in a time of war.

I would not buy the comment that people believed when they enlisted that they would not be sent to Iraq because anybody that stupid would not meet the minimum intelligence requirements to enlist.

As for 'wanting' to go to Iraq - nobody really 'wants' to go there. We all have places we would rather be. But we have a job to do and we understand the reasons we are there. So we go.

Do they want to be in Iraq? Well, while I doubt it is their choice of a prime vacation spot we do have an all volunteer military and have had for quite some time. When they signed on the dotted line they agreed to go where they were deployed. I believe the majority of them want to be where they are needed and can best do the job they have chosen so yes, I do believe our soldiers want to be in Iraq.

To idontwannabea whatever: Many "poor whites and blacks" sign up for the military because it offers them the best chance for a quality education (Harvard even) and many many take advantage of that. I agree that the choices our poor citizens have can be slim to none sometimes, but they are far better than the choices the poor in countries like Iraq have had for decades. Maybe, just maybe our soldiers being over there will change that for some. My advice to you is, if you don't want to go to Iraq, fine, just don't sign on that dotted line!

Neither.

The US military is all volunteers, so they were not forced to be in the armed forces.

As for wanting to be in Iraq, I would say near 100% of the military don't like war. If they had a choice, no wars would be fought. However, they understand that war is sometimes necessary, and that once engaged, it is important to press to victory.

The vast majority of the military in Iraq believe it is important to finish the job. I believe they understand the consequences of an abrupt retreat much better than some yankee yokels do.

The military, who fight the wars, were more aware of international events and geopolitics than most civilians, because they are the ones who are going to do the fighting.

Here's what's happening:

1) Many troops enter into the military with the understanding that they probably won't end up in Iraq but they end up being shipped out there.

2) Most troops are good patriotic Americans. And we should support them. But really, what are they fighting for? The United States is being colonized by Mexico and within a few decades will be owned by Mexico. Thus American troops will become refugees in their own homeland. Most Americans have been propagandized to believe they're doing a moral good duty. But the fact remains, Bush has sold out the United States to Mexico and multi-national corporations who are drunk on cheap labor.

In saying this, we need to bring our troops home and cut off all immigration from the Middle East.

Some one said the Armed Forces enlisted personel are poor blacks and whites who have no other choice due to monetary reasons? SMH I'm black and enlisted ( a Non Commisioned Officer, Staff Sgt.) with a 4yr degree and I joined because this is a great nation where I live so I felt I should help protect it for my loved ones and fellow country men. As soldiers we follow orders, the people elected our President as our Commander in Chief so he makes the decisions( sad enough). I don't agree fully with our President but part of good soldiering is being the best soldier you can be and follow orders. Personally I don't want to be in Iraq, I'm going on my third tour, but I can say the media sensationalize every negative aspect and doesnt show enough of the good that I have seen in my 2years out there. We all signed up to be here, yes we will never fully agree with our Commanders, but as soldiers we follow orders, men already in know this and men and women signing up should know this.

Officers choose to be in the military because Mom and Dad could afford to send them to college. Poor blacks and whites join the military because they are forced by economics to join. Most poor people become enlisted, the lowest thing on the planet. Soldiers, that is, enlisted, the group which do most of the fighting, dying and limb-losing do NOT want to go to Iraq, but I guess they don't want to sell crack either..and those two choices are all that most poor people have.

There I go again offended some low life. Thumbs down! Everywhere! TY! Now Another Thumbs down! I never could figure out how to do that.

Look. Simple question. How many here know someone in the military? Does that person come from a reasonably stable family or does he come from the county jail after poverty made him sell crack? Funny how in peace time you cannot join the military if you have a felony, but boy oh boy, when you start scaring off even the POOR people so that they dont want to join, ****, those standards come down! Our leaders are hipocrits who change the rules to fit the moment. I wouldn't go to Iraq for God, Country, Bush, Cheney, Mama, Grandmama, or Yo MAMA. I was in my damn self for 8.5 years. Went to first Gulf War for 6 months, Nobody gives a damn about sacrifice for your country! Patriotism?!?! That's for people who can afford BS sentiment. I bet you that most soldiers in Iraq right now don't feel too damn patritotic. Cheney got any kids over there? Any sons or daughters or grandchildren? Hell NOO!!

the soldiers are all volunteers, they want to fight, they want to win, and they want to represent our country and be a beacon for freedom. and by the way on the subject every soldier swore an oath to serve our country under the order of our leader, and it would not suprise me that our soldiers are very dissapointed with the people of America, because our military are fighting to win, but it appears the people want to lose. to bring our soldiers home before the victory, and before the war is over would be an insult to all who have fought and died. the people do not have what it takes to win a war, but our govt and military do. the people are disgracing this country and our troops. Our soldiers want to win and are tired of loseing just because of the peoples selfishness and greed of unwillingness to stay and fight.

We've had an all volunteer force since 1973, so anyone in the service today is there by their own volition.

Most of them want to fight for the country and some of them have no choice arent they? They have to do it anyway because this is their job and they cant just say no. They cant do anything about it.
