I know domestic dogs can breed with coyotes and wolves and some people (though it's stupid), breed them on purpose. I'm wondering because my dog looks a lot like a fox. In fact, my Mom and I saw one running across the road this morning by our house and she really thought it was our dog!

It would be genetically possible, though doubt that it would happen, as most dogs attack foxes. Both domesticated dogs and foxes come from the same family know as Canidae.

Can Dogs Mate With Foxes

They COULD in theory mate with foxes, but as another reader said, the differing numbers of chromosomes would not produce an embryo, even a mutated one. The chromosome numbers are just too far off. Horses and zebras, horses and donkeys, lions and tigers, dogs and coyotes, dogs and wolves can mate within those groupings successfully.....it's unusual but still possible, because they have the same number of chromosomes with different genes on them that identify them as separate species. The only animals aside from humans to have sex for pleasure instead of merely procreation are dolphins. So it's possible, but if it's not going to produce offspring, mostly animals don't do it.

No. Dogs, wolves, and coyotes are all in the same Genus (Canis), while foxes are a different Genus altogether (Vulpes).

Dogs, wolves, and coyotes have 78 chromosomes, foxes have 38 chromosomes.

"The great genetic mismatch between red foxes and domestic dogs makes the dox hybrid no more real than a cabbit (cat-rabbit) hybrid."

I suppose it's possible but very unlikely. Most dogs don't like fox's and chase them out of the yard.
