He broke up with me among other reasons because of the distance; I'm in New York; he's in Tokyo. We started dating in Tokyo, then I had to move to New York. The break up was not mutual, but it was open ended, in that he did not completely rule out the possibility of getting back together once I moved back to Tokyo. I'm moving back to Tokyo to start work there in May; he doesn't know that yet. He wanted to be friends and as friends, he would email me at the same rate, he said, and I can call him on the phone, we can meet in Tokyo "as friends". But he is responding quicker to my emails, initiating conversations, and he writes me: "[my name], hello. [my name], fundamentally there is no problem. [my name], by the way now are you coming to Japan in April?" I am wondering why he wants to know whether I'm coming back to Japan and why is he talking to me more? When I asked him, he said there is no one new.

Well it sounds like he still has feelings for you, but you can't take my word on it.
When a guy starts talking to you more it's always a clue! Plus if he's asking you when you are going back to Tokyo! Also, if he has found no one new then it probably means he hasn't got over you because of another person (which is what usually happens).
Why don't you tell him you are coming back in May for work and see what his responce is? You should be able to tell whether he still likes you from that, and then maybe take that chance to ask him about his feelings. He might just be totally upfront with you about it - then you can stop worrying!
I hope everything goes well in Tokyo and good luck!

He is lonely and missing you. Probably he broke up with you is he does not want to hurt you if a long distance relationship is involved and it failed. Tell him that you'll be coming in May and you would want to start anew. If you are not staying long in Japan think carefully whether you would want to be commited to him or not.
