NASA has an excellent link to help answer your question. There are even videos here. It tells about what technology is being used in space.
Space technology is used to observe and measure tectonic motion of the Earth's surface and predicts earthquakes.
Obviously, through improved space technology we can learn more about the planets, atmosphere, solar system, etc. One way we benefit is through weather satellite images so we can better predict the storms and prepare for them. Satellites are used for weather observations, communications, mapping the Earth. Through remote sensing, scientists can perform large-scale mapping to look at changes in vegetation growth, to map the spread of cities, and to study the effects of humans on the global environment. With this education, we are better able to prepare for our own futures as our global environment changes.
Note: Some of this info came directly from a 6th grade science book, so you need to rephrase it if you use it.
