Bill Gates is currently running neck and neck with Warren Buffet for the title of wealthiest man alive, but neither are the richest men in history when you calculate their wealth in relation to the value of the dollar right now. That award belongs to oil tycoon John D. Rockefeller, whose personal fortune was estimated at 900 million dollars in the early 1900's, when the buying power of a dollar was several times what it is now. That translates to about 189.5 billion dollars in today's economy. Also worth noting: when compared in the same terms, Bill Gates ranks #5 in U.S. history at a comparatively paltry 61 billion. And whoever told you that Donald Trump is even close was mistaken. He doesn't rank.
