I don't think they can be cured totally - there's the bad news.
The good news is, there are any number of products on the market to reduce or cover the dark circles you have.
You can find some good information and products to treat dark circles at www.dermadoctor.com. Just go to the search field that says "search by condition", and click on dark circles. Now, their products are a bit pricey for some, so if that's too much for your budget, try the Murad eyecare (available at this same website), or find an Avon representative. Avon was among the first to come out with eye creams to treat dark circles, and their products are more reasonably priced. Don't expect miracles from anything, pricey or not....but you should experience improvement.
As for coverage, there is a foundation I highly recommend: Dermacia (www.dermaciatv.org). I apply the foundation all over my face with a sponge, then I use a small brush and my fingertip to blend additional makeup to cover the dark circles - it's some of the most natural and effective coverage I've found. If that's too pricey, then go to your local department store cosmetic counter and get some professional recommendations and tips on how to apply the makeup. If you literally feel ashamed of the condition, then this is where you need to be willing to spend more for your cosmetics or skincare. I've never had much luck with the bargain brand coversticks at the grocery store or pharmacy. Seems like those colors don't look natural, and can actually draw attention to the undereye area, which is the last thing you want to do.
Finally, if the problem is really severe, you may want to make an appointment with a dermatologist to see what they would recommend. I'm assuming from your description that this is due to genetics and not some underlying health problem or sleep issue.... but of course if you think it is health-related then you need to see a physician right away!
Hope this helps - good luck!

Beauty Sleep
A report of a recent study discounts the idea of "Beauty Sleep" as a purely perceptual issue. In this study they took 15 men and women (ages 18-45) and deprived them of sleep for 48 hours in a room together not allowing them to use any toiletry products. While an interesting attempt at investigating this issue, I seriously do not think this study could have been more poorly performed. My questions are simple:
1. Why both men and women?, With this small of a group, I would think it would be impossible to tell the differences between men and women.
2. Why such a small sample size? This is not enough people to get any real discernable results.
3. What was really measured? There was little mention of how they determined or defined dark circles, skin deterioration, etc.
4. Why was the perception of beauty downplayed as not being significant vs. objective physical identifiable characteristics?
Beauty is purely a perception. Look at magazine ads in different countries and you will see vastly different thoughts on what is beautiful and what is not? Look at the new Dove girls ad -- those women are very beautiful, yet in a very different way than Hollywood may think of beauty. My feelings are quite the opposite of the recent article and study, if those individuals thought that they had bad skin, and thought that their eyes looked worse, then guess what, they did. Furthermore, if they thought that they looked better after getting a good nights rest, then again guess what, they did.

There are many causes of dark circles, from age, heredity, allergies, cold or sinus infection, bone structure and glasses which are not so commonly known.

If you would like to apply home remedies to reduce dark circles, here are some of my suggestions:
Buy a box of regular, old fashioned unflavored gelatin (e.g. Knox) from grocery store. Take a small cup or bowl and put in 1 teaspoon of the gelatin mix. Add one tablespoon of boiling water & stir for a minute. Test it on your wrist to make sure it is not too hot. Then, using a cotton ball, pat it under your eyes as you would an eye cream or gel. Go lie down and listen to some music, or take a bath & let it stay on for at least 30 minutes. Then just rinse it off.Gelatin is very high in Vitamin K & Biotin. It will not remove your dark circles on the first application (but you will notice a difference), but if you do it daily for a week, and then 2-3 times a week for maintenance, you should notice a drastic reduction in dark circles.

Don't be ashamed! I know of something that will help. Arbonne has an excellent anti-aging line that is specifically formulated to address the after effects of sun damage and aging. Their facial serum and eye cream contain a natural lightening agent called kojic acid. It reduces the appearance of long term environmental damage such as brown spots, freckles, pregnancy masks, etc, and is great for spot treating. The eye cream if perfect to reduce dark circles and puffiness under your eyes. I would be happy to send you a sample if you would be open to giving it a try. Take a look at some of the before and after results. http://arbonne.com/company/opportunity/people/before-after.asp?i=anti_aging

There are three main reasons for dark circles: dehydration, lack of sleep and lack of vitamin K. If you drink enough fluids, rest well and get enough vitamin K daily, your dark circles should disappear. Vitamin K can be found in most greens, eggs, cheeses, among others. If this doesn't work, see your dermatologist. Good luck!
