I think it depends more on the level of alert when you fly, the airport, and the screening officer than it does your shoe.
I'm from Canada and we went through a short lived fad where about half the time you took your shoes off. Then they use to ask if you knew you had metal in the shoes so you could take them off to not set off the detector. I haven't taken mine off in Canada for 2 years. But if you go to the US, it still seems more like every time they x ray your shoes.

Since August, all shoes are to be removed at all airports. It used to be different, any shoe with a sole or heel 1" thick or more, thanks to the infamous shoe bomber Richard Reid. Most popular sneakers fit this definition because of the molded shape of the soles. It's irrelevant now, though, it's just all shoes. The thing I can't believe is how many people don't wear socks and walk barefoot through the checkpoint. Disgusting!!!

In USA you have to remove shoes and other footwear. Anyway, I think I'll be strip searched next time for 'having a go' at the idiots who opened our cases (locked with code) searched them without us being present and put a notice inside both saying that they had a right to do this and that we should not lock our cases because if they had broken the locks, no compensation would be payable.
Sorry, I have digressed somewhat but it shows the nature of the paranoia in USA.

i've never heard of any rule about sole height...i almost always have to remove my shoes when going through the airport because of a screw i had surgically put in my foot after breaking it thrice...i wouldnt worry about it too much, unless your trying to hide something....which is prolly what they might think because extra room in your shoe could equal extra room to hide stuff...dunno....good luck

i depends on the airport and the local rules, ive seen airports where no one had to have their shoes scanned, some where everyone had to take the shoes of, or some where you had to remove your shoes when you failed the metal detector.
