Forget tips. My father has been doing this for as long as I can remember. He just started giving out the recipe. A simple soy sauce and brown sugar marinade, with hints of lemon and garlic, are the perfect salty-sweet complement to rich salmon fillets. Even my 9 year old loves this recipe.
INGREDIENTS
1 1/2 pounds salmon fillets
lemon pepper to taste
garlic powder to taste
salt to taste
1/3 cup soy sauce
1/3 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup water
1/4 cup vegetable oil
DIRECTIONS
Season salmon fillets with lemon pepper, garlic powder, and salt.
In a small bowl, stir together soy sauce, brown sugar, water, and vegetable oil until sugar is dissolved. Place fish in a large resealable plastic bag with the soy sauce mixture, seal, and turn to coat. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours.
Preheat grill for medium heat.
Lightly oil grill grate. Place salmon on the preheated grill, and discard marinade. Cook salmon for 6 to 8 minutes per side, or until the fish flakes easily with a fork.

Fish that come in steaks grill best directly on the bbq. Try tuna, sword or salmon. Filleted fish such as flounder, tilapia, trout and blue can still be grilled in aluminum foil.
When grilling make sure you oil the grates really well and do not turn fish until the 1st side is done or it will stick.
If you choose to grill filets in foil add a little butter, white wine, herbs, onions to fish and wrap foil tightly in a packet. Cook about 10 mins. Open packet to check, if fish is opaque and flakes w/a fork it's done.

I did this one last year with a small mouthed bass I caught..
Fillet and skin the fish, or buy it that way.
Put the fillet on a sheet of aluminum foil.
sprinkle on garlic and lemon pepper
add a little butter and a few onion slices
wrap in the foil and place on the grill.
cook for about 15 minutes.
