Some people are hesitant to give money to people on the street because they do not know what the person will use it for.
Instead, I give them a Hope Bag - a bag with a balanced meal in flip top cans, a short note of hope and encouragement, and a self-addressed stamped card that they can use to let you know what their needs are.
Project Hopebags can be done by an individual or a group. Find out more details by going to http://www.hopebags.com

I took a man off the street and moved him into my apartment. I was homeless for over 3 years and much of the reason i retained my faith through time was that it was mostly Christians who helped me and treated me like a human being. However there were also many other kind people so I also got to learn that there are good and bad people everywhere.

When I see someone in need, I try to find out what they need. Lately I have not seen too many out on the street.
Instead, I'm concentrating on working with people who are one step away from being homeless. Perhaps by intervening at that point, we can keep more people from going out onto the streets.

I'm an atheist. I gave a man a dollar about 2 weeks ago. He didn't look homeless but he was definitely a little crazy. I wasn't going to give him anything but he started getting really close to me and he said he had AIDS. I figured that it wasn't worth it to risk it so I gave him a dollar to get him off my back.
Where I live there is a "homeless" person on every median at every intersection. It is the same ones and they've been there for about a year and a half. Its a good business out here and the good weather permits it.

the last time i saw a homeless person was about five months ago and i was on a school bus on my way to a high school Christian youth rally and we were on the interstate and he was WAY over on the other exit and we couldn't exactly stop. besides that the last time i saw one was when i lived in a big city....and i was nine years old. howeverm there was a homeless man that always stood on our exit and i would beg my mom not to stop b.c he scared me, but whenever we had time or if we had extra food or something we would stop and give it to him, and now i understand.
there's only one homeless man in my town who begs and he's been arrested for molesting young ladies who were trying to help him....and since i am a young lady of only fourteen years, he can do without my help.

I never give people on the street money. I do donate a pretty good sum to the Salvation Army. In fact I have it deducted automatically from my paycheck. Some people who beg on the street are scam artists and are stealing money intended for the truly needy. Some truly needy are drug or alcohol addicted and giving such addicts money will only enable the behavior that is killing them in body and in spirit. By donating, instead, to the organizations that can actually help the needy one can insure that the money isn't being stolen or being used to support a drug or alcohol addicts own self destruction.

To be honest with you. Not in a while. although i do live in a very small town that has virtually no one, but farmers. lol! But if i did see someone needed on one of our streets i would most likely give him/her money.

I don't believe in Panhandling, I have followed these so called bums home to their million dollar homes in the suburbs ! Pahandling is big business ! Plus people that give to these guys at traffic lights should be arrested because they are making it dangerous because it only encourages them to beg more, so now like in Baltimore every Traffic light has a bum at it begging for money causing traffic accidents cause they stay in the road when the light turns green

It was after my husbands first life threatening surgery, where he died (there was no breath in him), and came back to life. There was a beggar, sitting on the sidewalk, with a ragged blanket wrapped around his waist and legs. He was playing a guitar, with the case open at his feet, begging for "alms'. I was so happy, I took a coin of very small value (a toonie) out of my meager purse, and threw it in the case. That was at Mt. Sinia.

About 2 years ago. The man was telling me he lost his family, and he was trying to get a job, etc.. He was weeping like crazy. I gave him 10 dollars. He promised me he would come to church the next day, so he could get some spiritual help. He didn't show up. So for the rest of my life, if I'm not convinced that person is truly in need, I will never give another dollar away. I would rather give money to my Saturday Bible school students. At least they're trying to do right. The Bible says, "if a man shall not work, neither shall he eat."
