Nothing survives after death. - Ecclesiastes 9:5; Psalm 146:4.
When one dies even the soul itself is dead. - Ezekiel 18:4, 20
Jesus likened death to being asleep in John 11:11-14.
However, we are not with hope due to the fact of the promised resurrection. - Isaiah 26:19; Daniel 12:2; John 5:28, 29; 11:25; Acts 24:15; Revelation 20:13.

Never was there a time when I did not exist, nor you, nor all these kings; nor in the future shall any of us cease to be.As the embodied soul continuously passes, in this body, from boyhood to youth to old age, the soul similarly passes into another body at death. A sober person is not bewildered by such a change.Bhagavad-gita-2.12 & 13
Those who are seers of the truth have concluded that of the nonexistent [the material body] there is no endurance and of the eternal [the soul] there is no change. This they have concluded by studying the nature of both. Bhagavad-gita-2.16
An excerpt from the purport to the above verse by Srila Prabhupada (ISKCON founder), who quotes from scriptures;
There is no endurance of the changing body. That the body is changing every moment by the actions and reactions of the different cells is admitted by modern medical science; and thus growth and old age are taking place in the body. But the spirit soul exists permanently, remaining the same despite all changes of the body and the mind. That is the difference between matter and spirit. By nature, the body is ever changing, and the soul is eternal. This conclusion is established by all classes of seers of the truth, both impersonalist and personalist. In the Vishnu Purana (2.12.38) it is stated that Vishnu and His abodes all have self-illuminated spiritual existence (jyotimsii vishnur bhuvanani vishnuh). The words existent and nonexistent refer only to spirit and matter. That is the version of all seers of truth.
That which pervades the entire body you should know to be indestructible. No one is able to destroy that imperishable soul.
Bhagavad-gita-2.17
Lord Krishna gives further information in verses 22 to 25, .
As a person puts on new garments, giving up old ones, the soul similarly accepts new material bodies, giving up the old and useless ones.The soul can never be cut to pieces by any weapon, nor burned by fire, nor moistened by water, nor withered by the wind.This individual soul is unbreakable and insoluble, and can be neither burned nor dried. He is everlasting, present everywhere, unchangeable, immovable and eternally the same.It is said that the soul is invisible, inconceivable and immutable. Knowing this, you should not grieve for the body.

King Solomon addresses the "afterlife" in Ecclesiastes chapter 9. I don't want to quote it because there are several appropriate verses in that chapter.
The concept of hellfire is clearly unscriptural. Punishment for our misdeeds? Romans 6:7 says that "he who has died has been acquitted of his sins."
The promise of everlasting life is there, yes. But if you look at John 5:28,29, it talks of those that have died being raised from their memorial tombs to a resurrection of life or judgment. Our actions after that resurrection will determine whether or not we are granted everlasting life. Until that resurrection we are merely "conscious of nothing" as King Solomon said.
I hope that helps you a bit.

John 5:25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live. 26 For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself; 27 And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man. 28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, 29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.
These scriptures clearly state that our judgement is based on the deeds in this life.(they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life). Not after the resurrection.
