I am a Christian, and I heard a preacher on tv say that the war in Iraq is biblically based. He explained that this is World War III, and that shortly after the war ends Jesus will return to get the church. I just wondered how any Chrisitans and non-christians feel about this subject.

Let me know who he is so I can point and laugh when it doesn't come true...

I wondered that as well. This wasn't a biblical prediction. It was a predictions from Nostrodamus. The bible makes some references to some of the events, but nothing about "world war III"

They have been calling for the end of the world for the last 1000 years. The Crusades were thought to be the end too.

This is not supported by Scripture. Jesus will return after the Jewish people have repented of their sin caused by rejecting Jesus' Messiahship and their refusal to enter into the promised New Covenant of Jeremiah 31:31-34. See Ezekiel 20:33-44, for example. Once they have repented of their sins as a people, they will beg Jesus to return.

It's not the Iraq war -- or any war --that will do this. In fact, Daniel 9:26-27 tells us that, after the invasion of Israel by Russia, Iran and other muslim middle eastern nations (see Ezekiel 38 & 39), the Antichrist will rise and broker a covenant of peace for the middle east. Therefore, the Iraq war (and all other wars and rumors of wars going on now) is totally irrelevent.

The only possible way Iraq enters into this whole thing is the fact that it's not listed as one of the nations participating in the Israel invasion. For whatever reason, it's God's plan that Iraq be restrained from doing so.

p.s.-- was it John Hagee that said this? I really don't recommend anyone listen to him. He's not interested in teaching Scripture anymore -- he's interested in showboating.

This is far from being a world war. If you read a bit of history you will find that a world war is so huge it rages on every continent (to varying degrees) and the majority of soveriegn nations get involved. There is no such thing going on in the world at this time. The only thing neede to counter such ridiculous claims is a little common sense. Try it, you'll like it.

The preacher spoke much falsehood.

What is he gonna do if Jesus does not come back after this war?

Wait and claim the same thing when there is another war in the middle east?

Hmm..that brings the topic to another subject.

Is the Bush clan causing wars in Middle East simply because they think its gonna bring Jesus back?

My gut reaction is that it is a good example of religious leaders turning into pawns and mouthpieces for a corrupt government.

Many did that in Jesus time, which is why he called some of the "religious leaders" snakes, vipers, and "sons of hell." They proclaimed to worship God and serve people, yet they kept people in bondage with endless regulations, and oppressed the poor. Not a lot of real ministry going on. Sound familiar?

Well there is some truth to that, but I don't know about armaggedon. I read a chain letter one day that described all of the events that have happened in Iraq. And it just so happens that a lot of events spoke about in the bible happened in Iraq. Iraq is believed to be the first human inhabited country, and that all life spawned from it.

I think the preacher is a halfwit. In the US clerics like that are taken seriously- in the UK he'd be ignored and dismissed as a numbskull.

Well, I think that the preacher who said this is wrong. This is not WWIII. As far as the return of Christ is concerned to many prophecies in the Bible have NOT come to pass.
