A friend was arrested in London. I would like to find out why and with what she was charged. Are police booking public information? Can I find such on the web?

If the person is in police custody (whether charged or otherwise), you can contact the station at which she is being held and request this information. The police have a duty to ask the detained person whether or not they would like this information to be released. She is also entitled to speak to you on the phone subject to certain conditions.

If she has been charged and bailed to court, the only place you will be able to find out any information is from the court itself. By law she should appear at the 'next available sitting' (which will be tomorrow if charged today) but I expect that she won't appear for 7-10 days in reality.

You need to contact the Magistrate's Court in the area she was charged or committed the offence (presumably the same) and ask if they can release any listings information. They are unlikely to do this until the day she is appearing, however.

Other than that, the information is stored by the CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) which is highly restricted.

You could, of course, just ask her?

under the data protection act, the police cannot tell you anything. Like the other guy said, if she is in custody she will be entitled to have someone informed of her arrest NOT necessarily to make a phone call herself. Unless she chose to call you or have you informed, the police are under no obligation to tell you anything. They may be nice and ask her, and if she agrees to tell you then fine, but its not an obligation

I'm afraid not. The only way, initially, would be to ask your friend. The only way of finding out, is if it went to court, and you turned up on the day in the court building. The details of who is in court that day, and what offence they are accused of will be on a bit of printed paper on the wall... however, this may not happen for several months, if at all.

I am afraid you will have to wait for your friend to get in touch with you ad the police cannot divulge any information about people in custody.

The police will not tell you anything it is confidential for the accused's benefit and under data protection.

No, you would only be able to get this information from the Criminal Records Bureau and you need the permission from the person concerned

I don't think so, if you know what court she is in it will be posted on the courtroom notice board along with her name.
