I have a navel piercing and I don't know what type of saline solution to buy, is it alright to mix salt in warm water and soak a cotton pad in it and cover the piercing with the pad?
Or use contact lens solution

well first off the piercer should've given you after care along with an after care sheet. But since he didnt, well that should tell you one thing, anywho what you can do is get sea salt. Some piercers dont recommend it simply because if you use too much sea salt and not enough water it'll harm the piercing, and if there isnt enough sea salt...ur pretty much just soaking it in water. what you want to do is get a table 1/8 - 1/4 teaspoon of non-iodized (iodine free) sea salt into one cup (8 oz) of warm distilled and mix them together. what i find to be easier is to get a cup of the sea salt solution and well you put the cup over your navel and then can lay down facing up with the cup over your navel so that the solution is pretty much on your navel and then you can let it soak for a couple of minutes and then just rinse it lightly and ur good to go.
preferable i'd suggest this soap that i get from my piercer its called Provon. its really good medicated soap. you can ask your local piercing shop if they have any. and if you are able to get a hold of some Provon you just clean your piercing in the shower after you're done shampooin, washin up...and everything else, you want to get a q-tip and put some Provon on it, and rub it around the piercing gently and work up a nice lather and then rinse it off. after that you leave the piercing alone.
also you dont want to submerge your piercing into any sort of water like lakes, ocean, baths, jacuzzis, hot tubs...etc bc all sorts of bacteria are in there...

Use non iodized sea salt, please :-D and use distilled or well boiled (but cooled off) water so that its warm. The solution should be approximately 1/4 teaspoon per cup of water and should taste like your tears. Do salt soaks every other day but be sure you are still cleaning your navel twice daily with Dial soap and water, rinsing well.
I don't suggest cotton pads because there are small fibers that could get stuck in the piercing. Use a shot glass and just hold it over your navel for 10-15 mintues.
Contact lens solution is okay, but there are some unncessary chemicals in there.

Do not use contact lense solution! Dont buy saline either, make your own, fresh each time you use it, buy rock salt, its cheap and readily available. mix half a teaspoonful with half a pint of boiling water, allow to cool, use ase required and necessary, i have 13 piercings and would never use anything else, it works a treat, good luck

do not use table salt or epsom salt. You need to use specifically Non-iodized sea salt, which you can find at a health food store.
You should also be using an antibacterial soap without fragrance or colors. Tea tree oil hand soap works great. You can find that at a health food store as well.
Don't over wash either. Twice a day is fine.
good luck!

Sea salt...get it in a grinder from the grocery store and dissolve in a little boiling water...let it cool. Follow directions from your body piercer.
You can pour it right on when you are in the shower or hold the cotton pad below it and pour it on that way too. Zombie Eater will be able to best advise you.

I just got mine done and the guy who did mine said don't use anything but antibacterial soap on it twice a day, everyone says something different. Just call whoever pierced it and ask them what they would reccomend for after care.
