I'm looking for US insurance companies that offer this service - i.e. instead of buying home insurance to cover everything, to buy insurance just for individual items.

You might be ahead to just buy a renters or homeowners policy, with whatever riders are needed to cover additional items. You could be setting yourself up for disaster if you have a loss and aren't insured. And if you did find someone to cover the individual items, the costs might add up to more than what you'd pay for a more comprehensive coverage.

Extended warranties can usually be bought on electronic items when you purchase them. This coverage is different that what insurance would cover, and usually takes care of something going wrong with the product itself, not the coverage for such things as loss by theft or fire that insurance would cover.

The easy and less expensive way is having this items covered by your home owner or rental insurance. Companies that offer individual insurance is for thing that you use professionally One example, you have a very expensive camera for your own use is cover by insurance but if you make a living a a photographer you should have commercial insurance, same thing goes for example with musical instruments, etc.

You would have to buy extra coverage when you buy your item. IE: with Dell, you can buy and extended warranty that covers accidental damage. The ipod? may be the same thing. Check with the place you purchased the ipod. They may have an answer for you. I am an insurance agent and there isn't an insurance policy like you're asking about. That's what homeowners insurance does.

You need a Homeowners Policy or instead you can buy a Inland Marine Personal Property and insured all the items that you have.

Fireman's Fund Insurance Company offer the Prestige Collection Program. Here the link for more information:

Firemans Fund used to have an Inland marine policy available.
www.firemansfund.com
Your local independent ins broker can get you more info.

Basicaly when you add an endorsement to your homeowner for jewelry, furs, electronics, etc... the form is an inland marine form.

The broker will know which companies are willing to write then on a stand alone basis. Just as a footnote..... when you are only looking at an Ipod, or a cellphone.... you are going to be looking at a company minimum premium.. $250 - 500, just to cover co. overhead, if your broker goes with a company that he's appointed with, then he'll get commission and you won't have a brokers fee added to that.

Insurance for your cell can be purchased through your cell carrier.. lots cheaper.. Ipod... bythe time you're finished paying the premium, you could have replaced it, I think..
as for the laptop.. you're going to have to show what steps you're taking to secure it.. Do you leave it at work at night??
if you take it home with you, do you have an alarm system??
Do you want coverage for data recovery? If so, how ofter do you back up?? Where do you keep your records? OHHH, you keep them at home in safe??? WHO writes your Homeowner's coverage???

So you see.. you're back to square 1, just through underwriting questions.

But... it's worth a shot.

Good Luck

You can go to an independent agent, who will write a policy with Lloyds or other special risk outfit. Premiums START at $1,000, and will NOT include theft or mysterious disappearance. You're basically looking at straight fire coverage.

Obviously, it's cheaper and gives you better coverage on a renters or homeowners policy, but, hey, if you can't/won't get one, and have money to burn, you can go the other way.

There are amenities like that, yet you will possibly could desire to pay like $40 a month purely like properly-known cellular telephone provider and this way of provider does not come internally and you will possibly could desire to get from a on the spot service. She in all probability have been given a hotspot information superhighway provider. A hotspot is a place like an airport or Starbucks the place you will get online employing a properly-known on the spot adapter, inner or exterior.
