I’m extremely stressed and fear I might be reaching my breaking point. I’m working my way through college waiting tables, plus five extracurricular activities and schoolwork. My week is booked solid and I barely have any time left to see family or hang out with friends. I’m overworked and constantly tired, which has recently been affecting my health. I’m desperate for a release. What can I do?

Quit college and put some fun into your life. You can always do that later in your life. Prepare for the draft if that applies to you. Keep studying but choose only the material that you enjoy. That way you will be less programmed and more knowledgeable. Most of all enjoy your life. It is the reason you are alive.

You're overachieving. You need to back out of those extracurriculars. Pick one and quit the other 4. This is self-inflicted stress. There are always a lot of worthy things a person can do with their life, but if you do too much, you burn out. In my opinion, college plus job plus one extracurricular is plenty. Anyone would tell you the same thing. There is a limit to what any person can do!

What can I do to manage my stress?
The first step is to learn to recognize when you're feeling stressed. Early warning signs of stress include tension in your shoulders and neck, or clenching your hands into fists.

The next step is to choose a way to deal with your stress. One way is to avoid the event or thing that leads to your stress--but often this is not possible. A second way is to change how you react to stress. This is often the best way.

What is meditation?

Steps to deep breathing
Lie down on a flat surface.
Place a hand on your stomach, just above your navel. Place the other hand on your chest.
Breathe in slowly and try to make your stomach rise a little.
Hold your breath for a second.
Breathe out slowly and let your stomach go back down.

Meditation is a form of guided thought. It can take many forms. You may do it with exercise that uses the same motions over and over, like walking or swimming. You may meditate by practicing relaxation training, by stretching or by breathing deeply.

Relaxation training is easy.

Wow welcome to the world of working through college. Don't worry you'll make it through just remember not to kill yourself just trying to get through. Cut back on some of those extra cirricular activities this may give you better focus on your homework and a little extra time for family and friends. Remember overall your health is the most important - I mean seriously, what good would all your hard work do if you weren't even healthy enough to enjoy life after the pain. Breathe baby and remember, this too shall pass...

It sounds like you need to drop some extracurricular activities. You need the school, and the homework is a must of course...and sad enough you do probably need the job, but all the activities, that is a choice you are making. You need to decide what is most important to you.

It sounds like you need to lighten your load a little. You may love all your extracurricular activities, but your health is more important and that would be the easiest thing to step back from.

Give up the five extracurricular activities. Prioritize. School first, work second, and some leisure time, third.

Get rid of the extracurricular activities. This is like the patient who goes into the doctor and says everytime I stick the pencil in my eye, my eye hurts.

Prioritize your life and cut out the extras that do not meet a personal or financial need. If you doing it just because you wanted to please someone dump that event. You need to focus on school and paying your bills. The rest can wait so that you have time to regroup. Failure in school can have long term affects on your future.

Do you have any vacation time at work? You might consider taking a week off or taking a personal day just for you.
