We have had our 10 yr. old umbrella cockatoo Sammy for about a year and he has adjusted very well to his new home. We recently took him to the vet. He did very well at the vet office however transporting him was traumatic. We used a pet carrier such as one you would use for a cat or dog. It had plenty of light and we talked to him the whole time but he was very frightened. Unfortunately Sammy was not raised to go outside at all. It took a few days for him to want anything to do with us again and still he is somewhat hesitant at times. We are moving to a new home soon and I fear this will traumatize him worse. We love him so much... please help. thank you

He might do better if you cover the carrier with a light sheet. It will let the light in, but he won't see everything moving by so rapidly.

I have to transport my Indian Ringneck that way. She doesn't like the trees moving so fast.

Continue to talk to him and let him know what is going on. Maybe give him some treats in the carrier to eat. That way he knows he is not being punnished for something.

I recently took my Greenwing to the vet. Although she enjoys car rides she was traumatized by the actual vet examination and was not herself for 2 days afterward. Some birds just have strong reactions to stressful situations. Although your bird might get stressed out by the move, I think as long as you have his cage set up right away in an environment as similar to his old environment as possible he will be okay within a few days.
