Babbo is in Greenwich Village - is no where near the Theatre District and they are not open for lunch - otherwise a perfect well-informed choice
Joshua Tree, 46th and Eighth (good food, charming waitresses - excellent lunch specials and gooey desserts)

Heartland Brewery, 43rd between Sixth and Seventh (excellent burgers)

Pasta Lovers 49th between Sixth and Seventh

Giggles, 40th between Broadway and Sixth (nice place - good food)
I like the food at the above restaurants. If it's more about "fun" than food, try
Bubba Gump's on Broadway and 44th

Ollie's Noodle on 44th and Broadway (good scallion pancakes)
Ruby Foos on 49th and Broadway
And, of course, Carmine's on 44th and Broadway

Right on Broadway there is a place called The Stardust Diner. The servers sing to you. Very fun place, I love it there! The servers are fantastic. It's right near Time Sq.

The Stardust is a unique experience as one person wrote.
Virgil's is good BBQ, which is different from normal Manhattan cuisine. If you're willing to go north 10 blocks you have Jekyll and Hydes, which again is quite unique( 6th Ave and 58th, @).
Just a note: these places are different, but not necessarily good food. If you want excellent food, that's a different question ;-)
