Like a lot of people have mentioned for self study, there are tons of resources on and off the web. No one really touched on the written language, so I guess I will.

I learned the Hiragana and Katakana first. It helped me with pronunciation too, since when using the flash cards, I would have to say each syllable.

A good thing to do while learning the kana (Hiragana, Katagana and Kanji), is learning the basics of sentance structure and a few vocab. I mean really basic sentance struction, like "See spot run." basic and some vocab. Because then, you can use Skype, Yahoo or some other internet based phone to do language exchances with people from Japan right away. As you converse with them, soon you will move on to more complicated sentences and start using more and more of your vocabulary.

Pimsleurs. They teach several different languages, Japanese included. For the most part, it's entirely spoken, but they break it down and it's pretty easy to follow and remember.

Animes are spoken entirely in everyday Japanese, not formal Japanese. You might try listening to Japanese music, too. Some of it makes American music sound weak.

I've heard of Rosetta Stone (never tried it, though), but I'd be willing to give it a shot.

Anyhoo, good luck and I hope that helps.

If you aren't rushing, purchase a self-instructional course and start learning whenever possible eg while driving,in the office etc.
Once you have savings you can buy a trip to Japan and enrol in a langauge school there. Then you can become very proficient and gain an extra qualification in teaching Japanese back in the States or somewhere. What a marvellous language learning experience!

I learned Japanese faster using the Rosetta Stone computer program than taking three years of courses at my high school. The only bad thing is the cost... but sometimes you can find cheaper ones on ebay.

Many of them are looking for English-exchange partners so you would find someone with good luck.

Step B) Check Japanese language resources at

www.phrasebase.com

You can visit their online forums for real chat experience with japanese learners

Step C) Buy a Japanese-English book and snuggle into your bed (nothing better than old-fashioned method, is it?)

You could always visit Japan through a "study abroad" program... that would be an excellent way to learn about the language, people, and culture all at once. Plus it would be an awesome experience... especially if you're American. Most of us here in the US go our entire lives with English as the only language we ever speak. :(

It's always easier to learn a language when you are surrounded by lots of people who speak it :)

Animes or Japanese dramas that interest you are a good way to study japanese without getting bored. But if you're a fan of naruto, beware because it's full of japanese slang (or should I say yakuza language?)
Make sure the subtitles are good enough.

Ganbatte kudasai! Good luck!
