The plant must collect (or absorb I suppose) the light energy in order to drive photosynthesis. Unlike animals who eat other animals or plants for food, plants have to get their own energy and they get that from the sun through photosynthesis. Plants are autotrophs (good word to look up). If the plant doesn't absorb (collect) the light, it doesn't have energy to drive its biological processes, just like us not having food. Hope that answer helps :).

Plants use sun light for energy during the photosynthesis process...if I remember correctly.
