Don't believe what your step father is telling you. God's love for you is even more than Paul describes in 1 Cor 13.. The steadfast love of the lord never eases and his mercy never comes to an end. If you know God and love Jesus, every sins or wrongs you do is forgiven because of your faith in God. Read Roman 3,4,5 where Paul speaks of our forgiveness and love from God through Jesus Christ. The true description of love we should have for one another is the one in 1Cor 13.. We can try, like you said to love each other that way but remember than we are flesh but God's love surpasses it... Please don't believe anyone if they tell you your Father love (God) is little because like the bible said in Isaiah: your name is written in the Palm of his hand and each tears you're ever cried are kept in a bottle to be used to bring joy to you.. Read Isaiah and see the love that God has for you and you alone..
God bless you and peace to you always!

Things pointed out in the Bible like this disturb me but not in a fearful way, because it is a valid question, and I feel inclined to answer from the heart.
What your stepdad says, "He forgives during our lives but at the end, he has those records of wrongs." is not true from the standpoint of the Bible, as it says that when he forgives he erases it, but God does keep record if one doesn't seek repentance. Now, consider the context surrounding the sentence that your stepdad is highlighting:
. . .it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
When someone is unrepentant of something they've done there's often little need to keep record as they'll be proud of what they did, but those things a person is likely to seek forgiveness for they are ashamed of. So, I too believe it is possible to love as it says in Corinthians. Also, I can tell that you have a great challenge to your faith in your house, but that you should seek to love like this, and in that way no one can cause you such doubts again. Pray that I can have a faith as strong as yours and remember!
Guard your heart with all diligence for from it come the very issues of life.
Sorry for the long answer.

the only sins God records are those that are not yet forgiven. and yes i can say that people can love like that. my hubby and i went thru a bad patch about 3 or 4 years ago and he cheated on me twice. the experiances he had helped him see what he threw away when he cheated. and he came back with a sincere apology and his solemn vow before God that he wanted to make right the wrong. i loved him so much that i decided he was worth the chance. he has been faithfull ever since. we dont live in the past and i while i may remember it once in a while, it is not something that i think about or am hurt by at all. love can overcome anything if you let it. even as a child i felt love like that. my parents never ever let us think they didnt love us, no matter what we did.

Marissa, that's a great question, and with no disrespect to your stepdad, I disagree with him.
I believe that he is correct in that no human can love like that. It is a model of the perfect love that our heavenly Father shows us. I believe that God *can* love like that, and, in fact, *does* love us like that. How else could he become one of us and suffer and die so that we could be with him again someday?
I think that your stepdad is dead wrong when he says "God forgive us during our lives but at the end, he has those records of our wrongs." Take a look at Psalm 103: 8 - 12, and particularly verse 12 which says, "as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions (sins) from us."
I think that the reason St. Paul described this in his letter to the Corinthians is to illustrate for us what perfect love from God is, and while it is true that people cannot love perfectly like that (because of their sinful nature), that doesn't mean that we as Christians should not STRIVE to love like that.
Great question!

When God forgives, He forgets the forgiven man’s sin. Forgetfulness with man is a defect; however, with God it is an attribute. God never compares His forgiveness with human forgiveness. Scripture states instead that He puts the forgiven person’s sin behind His back, as far as the east is from the west, and casts the sin into the depths of the sea (Ps. 103:12; Is. 38:17; Micah 7:19). Divine forgiveness so far excels human forgiveness that no human analogy can illustrate it.

Many call this the Love chapter. I believe that a person can reach this level of love, but, it is not easy. God can love and forgive a person's wrong, if, their heart is true. We see many examples of this in the old Testament and New. Noah liked to take a nip too much, Abraham doubted a child in a very old age, David killed for another man's woman, the list goes on and on. But, we also see these people paid dearly for their wrongs, but, God says in the Old Testament that He will cast our sins into the "Sea of Forgetfulness" people who do not know God, can never understand. But, for a person to Love as God Loves is the ultimate achievement in this life (Aside of accepting Jesus).

I believe that only people filled with the Holy Spirit of God can love like that and probably not all the time. We will sin sometimes but Father God forgives us if we ask. The more we practice this love the more we become like Jesus who did love this way. Keep the faith and one day, you will be made perfect in Christ Jesus.

God can and does love us like that. Since when does God keep a record of our wrongs, He puts us in the book of life if we are saved, but He doesn't have a record of our wrongs.
We as humans have a very difficult time loving like that, I don't think it is impossible, just really hard. Think of this.
No greater love hath any man than to lay one's life down for a friend.
That's a God like love if you ask me.

Your step-dad is dead wrong. When we repent of our sins they are erased from are record forever. God can and does love like that, because of the precious price paid by a perfect saviour. To say God dosen't totally forgive or that He forgives yet keeps a record of our sins would mean that Christ's payment for our sins wasen't enough, and that is a LIE.

Naw.
Melissa, God brings it to you. Don't try it, try trusting Him.
You see, the more you make an effort to trust Him, especially about this matter-- the matters of the heart-- He does the work in you.
What got me going on this is this:
Psalm 42:1
As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.
What was it that David had that i didn't? I found myself a bit jealous. So I prayed on it. And do you know what God did? He fulfilled a promise that he made:
Psalm 37:4 Delight yourself in the LORD
and he will give you the desires of your heart.
You'll know when you get there. Believe me, you will know.
