I grew up in York and my mum still lives there so I visit there a couple of times a year. There is lots to do but some things do cost. If you are a student then you can get discounts in a number of places. The city walls are free. Theres the river to walk along. I believe the railway museum is free. The art gallery is free and ther are a number of art shops that are nice to look around if your into art. The castle museum and the jorvik centre are well worth a visit if your budget allows. York is great for shops there are loads. And mustn't forget York Minster, Check out the tourist info in Exhibition Square on arrival and they usually have details of current events and things to do. Have a good stay.

Visit the Museum, it is great and huge. Then spend the rest of the time walking around the historic City taking in the sights and perusing the little shops on the cobbled streets. The dungeons are not that good (especially for kids)and the viking centre is a bit in and out in 20 mins if on a budget.
