Love is an emotion, Marriage is a contract. The similarity is that the 2 people involved love each other or agree to act as if they did. This concept is derived from ancient Jewish law, it was incorporated into the bible and evolved into laws in christian nations. Originally a man would enter a contract with a girl and her family in which he agreed to take care of a daughter and her children. In return he gained possession of this girl and her children. Both people agree that they will not sleep with with anyone except their spouse, so the husband can be sure he is the biological father of the wife's children. You can argue that present day marriage in America is not a real contract because you agree that you will love, honor and cherish your spouse as long as you live, although you know that there is about a 50% chance that this will happen in the future. In a real contract you agree to do something that you have every intention of doing.

Marriage is stage in love which lays the foundation for greater love to prosper.True love should result in marriage, after which, depending upon how strong your love is you may remain happy or depressed.

The main difference is that while 2 people are in love, they are free from each other's responsibilities, since that is still taken by their guardians. After marriage you become responsible for each other, you have to take care of your wife, the expenses incurred in day to day life etc.You can't think only about yourself & do simply as you please,so in this way marriage imposes a few necessary restrictions on how you conduct your life compared to your life before marriage.

A successful marriage requires falling in love many times, always with the same person.

Love is a feeling, and emotion. Love is strong, forgiving, and giving your all no matter what. A marriage is a title to show the world that you are in love with this person, and that you are committed to them FOREVER. (not when times are hard, or you are not feeling special)
