I never really used to have this problem, but when i am 1st waking upi my eyes are soo dry. i wear contacts & take them out before bed. i am living in an apartment now, compared to a house where i never really had the problem before. i also have a cat, which i never used to. I have no known allergies, so what might be causing this?

Dry eye syndrome is very common. It happens to most people as they get older. What I recommend is that you use a lubricant in the eyes at bedtime. I find that "Genteal Gel" is one of the best and does not have messy oils like the others. you can get this at most drugstores or at drugstore.com
You'll find your problem resolving very quickly.

Could be one thing or many things. Even indoor cats cause allergies. I would make sure that the air filter in your apartment is new/clean. Eye drops are a very good suggestion, but stay away from drops that get the red out. They end up doing more damage than good. Preservative free eyedops like Gen-Teal actually refresh and hydrate your eyes. Systane is another good brand. I have worn contacts for many years and those were receommended by my eye doctor and have really helped my dry eyes! If those don't start to help you then I would see a doctor.

I get this problem for time to time and it is usually when I have worn my contacts the previous day or if I am really tired. What is started doing was putting in some eye drops 10 mins before bed. It helps me and I hope it helps you. Just so you know I do not think it is really related to your new apartment or your cat as you would experience problems through out the day not just when you wake up. Good luck and Good health to you.

I wear extended wear contacts and it seems my eyes dry out less if I sleep in them. I take them out sometimes though. You mentioned the apartment, it is winter and the heating system may be different than you had before, lower humidity. You may be getting older and that makes your eyes dryer. the eye drops that they recommend for contacts have glycol in them glycol is a lubricant and doesn't evaporate as fast as water. It won't hurt you.

it sounds like allergies. you should go to the doctor and get tested to see what you're allergic too. if you weren't raised around cats, then its likely the kitty's the problem. also make sure your lenses are clean, and try to spend more time wearing your glasses until you figure out what's bothering your eyes.
