I got this from your council's website.

On the year before your child is due to start school you fill out a CAF form which must be submitted before December in the year before your child starts school.

i put my sons name down at 18mnths he was lucky to get a place, were in rural wales here and the local school is very small it caters from age 3 through to 10 and its max capacity is 80 having said that its best school in the county so there is great competition to get the first child in but once hes sorted his siblings are automatic just remind the headmaster before hand that theres a sis or bro coming up soon

I live in Surrey and perhaps it's different here but at our local state schools (obviously different for the private sector) you're not able to put their names down more than a year ahead of intake. So if your child is due to start school in September 2008, you need to register in September 2007. Good luck x

My daughters name has been down since she was 6 weeks old. Get his name put down fast. The most popular schools fill up quickly and often it's a case of the last on the list doesn't get in.

If you have one particular school you would like your child to attend then you should do it as soon as you can. The school will then send you the appropriate forms when it is time to enrole your child formally but by then your child should be near the top of the waiting list and should not have any worries about them being accepted. At least it is one less thing to worry about when you are done.

My son was 3 when i put his name down, some of my friends thought i was mad, but he got a place and their kids didnt and they waited till their kids were 4. With my 2nd son, he goes to the feeder nursery school, so will get a place anyway, and as his brother goes to the infant school is will definately be accepted.

I don't live in that area but I have a three year old that can't go to school yet because, I didn't put him on the the waiting list and now he has to wait 6months, I would say put their name down asap!

It really depends on what kind of a waiting list they have. I have seen many places that you should call a couple of years before they are ready to start to ensure a spot....I have also been able in some to call up just a few months before hand and get them in. So my suggestion would be to pick some that you would be interested in and start calling them to see what their waiting list is like and go from there.

Good luck!

I have a little girl coming up 2 years and i put her name down at the beginning for the year. some people put there child's name down after the baby is born. So i would suggest to you to put it down asap to avoid disappointment.

well that depends as where I live you cant put your childs name down before they are ready to go up the year before...my local council sent letters out via the pre-school and you had to request your school and that was in nov of last year and we have just heard now that she got the school we wanted...bit of a lottery..are things different in others areas?
