It's a form of social control. How could you keep people from committing murder? Convince them that they will be tortured forever in the afterlife if they did that, or create a myth that says the souls of the murdered person will haunt the killer.
In an age that had no forensic science to catch criminals, myths like these served a purpose. Unfortunately, it can also be used to enforce lots of other rules, like tithing.
I'm convinced the myth of Eve eating the forbidden fruit gave men an excuse to keep women subjugated. The myth "proved" that women could not be trusted, and the women lost any power they had.

The idea of a hell was created as one notion in the medieval times, when religion still governed most people's way of life to have the people believe and put their faith in a god, so the church could control everyone using fear. These days, because society is slowly moving away from religion, the notion of a hell is used more blatently as a strangle hold to keep even more people from disproving the idea of a creator and thus losing their power of oppression.

well, mr. sho-nuff.
a lot of things were sort of compiled into christianity (as i hate to admit it for all the gung-ho christian-atics out there will probably form a mob and burn me) haha, no i am a christian myself but anyway.. this is all according to history, not just some mumbled opinions.
anywayy..
yes, so i'm sure you are all familiar with constantine who wouldnt let his empire decline so converted into christianity yada yada and was originally a sun paganist and yada yada and that is why halos are depicted because originally he meshed up his belief with christianity to form a all superior religion and also back in egypt there was another tale of a man who saved his kind like jesus and well wow look at this jesus's birthday isnt even in december, so why do people say that? hmm makes you think right well anyways. they probably did invent hell but hell has been around since beforee christianity but anyway thats not your question right...
death is actually really that scary. so they probably made a name for a place that is just as worse and started forming ways to stay out of there just for the sake of living
if that all makes sense im tired sorry but hope it helped

you don't even get it do you, Death is a personality and guess what it's going ot be the last to be thrown into the Lake of Fire, Satan will be thrown in there before Death. So Death really is natural in our world, but the bible says he's an enemy to God. God created Hell, for Satan

GOD cast Satan out of heaven and warned that he would forever parish in Hell for his terrible ways. People who understand the true meaning of "hell" know that death is hardly the fear of it. You should read the Holy Bible and get educated, otherwise you will just continue to sound ignorant. Thank you and may GOD help you.

Christians borrowed the concept of hell from Mitras or Zoroastrianism to gain more converts, and thus more power! The original Roman Catholic church was about power -- nothing more.

I think they created heaven because they couldn't deal with death being the end. I think they created hell to control their fellow man.

"If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, EVEN TO THE WORDS OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST, ....he is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions ans strife of words, whereof comes envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, perverse disputing of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth....." (I Tim. 6:3)
Thanks for proving that the Scriptures are true.
There are 162 references to HELL in the New Testament alone, over 70 of those spoken by Jesus Himself.
" He that believeth and is baptized SHALL BE SAVED; he that believes not SHALL BE DAMNED ". - Jesus
