You may have acid reflex, (a condition where your acids come up and damage your tongue, most times at night in your sleep)
I have this, and the sore tongue can make you cough a lot at times...... also I get the sore tongue . I though this was sharp edges of my teeth etc.but no....I suggest you see your doctor If this continues............Have a nice day................................

Hi Air Plane Lady, a few years ago I was extreamly worn out, low immune system, wanting to sleep all the time, one day I woke up & my tounge was really painful, burning and feeling raw, I went straight to the bathroom mirror, and got the shock of my life, when I poked my toung out I was horrified and convinced I had cancer of the toung, it was raw, swollen and had a really rough texture, I couldn't even brush my teeth because it hurt so much, I made an appointment that morning to see the Dr, it turned out to be Oral Thrush, a week on anti fungal liquid medication fixed the problem, I would advise you to see a Dr if your symptoms get worse or if it doesn't clear up on it's own in the next few days, hope your feeling better soon, for pain relief crush some Asprin with the back of a tea spoon and take it with a tea spoon of honey, take care

Anaemia can cause this as other conditions. Drinking liquids that are too hot.
Another thing that would do it is taking medication and chewing the tablets rather than swallowing them. I did this.
If your tongue has been sore for more than a day or too, you would be wise to see a doctor who may want to do some blood tests.
Hope that helps

Some dietary deficiencies can affect the tongue, so can things like throat infections, but the most likely cause is rough areas on your teeth.

Along with what other people have pointed out, it could be a minor allergic reaction.
