Actually, it is chocolate cake taken up to the next level. Devil's Food Cake can't be compared to ordinary Chocolate Cake, which is Chocolate Cake Level 1.

What distinguishes Chocolate Cake Level 2 (a.k.a. Devil's Food Cake) from Level 1 is the moistness of the cake. This is a must!! The chocolate MUST also have a rich, velvety texture, and when eaten, must give the gourmet an intense chocolate experience, the kind that even Willy Wonka would die for!!!

Hungry now??

Devils food cake is chocolate, just a darker kind.

Actually, it is a combination of three of the answers you already have....moister, richer or more dense cake layers, and the chocolate is dark chocolate, not milk chocolate flavor. It is a more intense chocolate flavor....so Willie Wonka would probably not let you skip ahead of him in line for the biggest piece!

Not milk chocolate, darker chocolate with chocolate frosting. Sinfully delicious is why it is Devils Food.
