By the amount in which they question and study it. And not just the religious texts but others texts as well.

All people are bias. Most people won't admit that.

Most people generalize all other people, but believe that they be seen as a "free thinking" individual.

A small band of Muslims are terrorists, therefore all Muslims are terrorists. A small number of Christians commit crimes therefore
the Christian religion is all about criminals.

Christians have a moral code to live by, therefore they are intolerant and think they are superior. Christians believe that homosexuality is a sin, therefore they are all homophobes. Christians believe in God and Jesus Christ, therefore they must be stupid. And to go with that, if you don't believe in evolution, therefore you are uneducated and again, stupid.

Most wars are about power and control over others and their resouces. But if the person that starts the war is any religion whatsoever, then that is the cause.

So to answer your question: The trait that is known as ego is a powerful force, a force that drives people's reason out of their head in an effort to be superior. Reggie Jackson put this into one of the best quotes of all time when he was asked about his ego, "The big man has an ego, the little man is all ego." This can be easily proven by simple everyday conversation. Most people relate theirself into anything you say. Just listen to what people say and how they say it. "I" this and "I" that, all the time. Always wanting to be on the right side of everything, in their mind.

For me, I know a lot about my religion (Christianity) because I've studied it from the book of Genesis to the history of the church right up to the present time. As to other religions, I've studied them in comparison to Christianity because I'm a student of theology. My own? Close to 40 years of personal study.

Others? I would never claim to know more about someone's religion than they do. At best I know a little bit of the basics.

I can speak for my own religion simply because I have studied it extensively. The only other religion I know almost as well is christianity since I used to be a religious christian raised by pastors for parents who taught me the sacraments etc.

I know very limited things about religion. It is not good for me of this I am certain. I study the Word of God so that I will be approved by Him. I give my faith to Jesus Christ as Lord because of this study. I do not seek to be religious because Jesus says that Father God wants my heart, my trust and my reliance on Him. This is better than religion.

Researching and studying a religion is easy. The faith angle is the most difficult, but some of that can be figured out through armchair psychology. Other parts of faith are more difficult to figure out (willful ignorance, cherry picking, etc; although my theory is one of learned behaviors, personally)
