I am having a baby on May 25th. At the Middle of August my family and I (husband is in the Army) are moving to Baumholder Germany. I was wondering does anyone know how an infants passport works or If they need one or if you just need their ss card and birth certificate. Also has anyone been stationed there and is it a good place for a family? also, we have to turn in all of our papers here in the next month to get my husbands command sponsorship and the baby wont be born yet to get the physical for the paperwork, does anyone know if there is exceptions or if you are delayed in moving when there is an impending birth? Any info would be helpful as my husband is overseas right now and I am kind of confused with the details. Fort knox sent me via email all kinds of forms but did not answer any of these questions.

Let's start at the top.

Your child will need a passport. 9 times out of 10, the Germans won't even check for it, but that 10 time could get you sent back to the states. It takes awhile for a passport to come thru, so you might want to check with http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html about the length of time to receive a passport, as well as if there is any way to speed up the process.

Baumholder is a good place to be. It's a bit out in the country, but the area is beautiful. For US shopping, Kaiserslautern in about 30 minutes away. You will be close to Luxemburg, Belgium, and France, so the local markets are great.

Don't even try to move until after the baby is born. It may make things more difficult, but if you submit the paperwork ahead of time, you will have to submit changes which can drag the process out even longer.

Good luck

Baumholder is a nice place. I was in Kaiserslautern (not too far from there) and have been to Baumholder a few times to see other people I knew. When your husband comes back from overseas, he will get all the information he needs from his levy briefing, so he can ask these questions - the Army will make sure you all get over there. If you can't wait until then, I would go to the ACS (Army Community Service) office on Fort Knox and they will answer any of your relocation questions. Good luck!

yes, the child will need at the very least, the No Fee Passport. Make sure the picture you take, the baby is AWAKE. they will NOT accept a photo with the eyes closed.

You would have to wait until after the baby is born and can be added to the paperwork before you can go over.
