Sounds like a tricky question to me. Since every shot involves moving the cue forward in a straight line with an accelerating motion, I would argue that there is only one shot. All shots in pool are a variation on the basic stroke. Tip position, speed and aim are the three variables that we have control over. I know that there are certain categories of shots based on the relative positions of the cue ball, object ball, and the target (usually a pocket), so I'm not trying to be facetious. On rare occasions the butt end of the cue may need to be elevated, but the stroke itself remains constant. 10 seems like a rather arbitrary number, but I suppose that's what the author came up with. M.D.-BCA Instructor/Referee.

P.S. I think Eightbraker is right. This sounds like the source you are referring to. I've read a description on this book and it sounds like a decent read.

P.P.S. Just to be a sport, I'll take at stab at the 10 shots:

1. Stop shot (straight in)
2. Follow shot (straight in)
3. Draw shot (straight in)
4. Stun shot (riding the tangent line, or stop shot on an angle)
5. Follow shot on an angle (bending forward of the tangent line)
6. Draw shot on an angle (bending backwards from the tangent line)
7. Kick shot
8. Bank shot
9. Left English (sidespin)
10. Right English (sidespin)

I hesistate to include English in the category of "basic shots" but I know that many texts these days consider sidespin something for beginners. I could've put jump shots and masse shots for 9 and 10, but that's even less reasonable.

I think your talking about the book, 10 basic shots in pool, by Gene Robinson. I have never read the book so I really don't know the shots you are looking for.It will be interesting to see the correct answer to your question.

Will start with the "straight in shot"......."the spot shot"......"the walk up the rail"......"the cut with a long walk to the other end of the table" and "the stop shot"......that would be my guess.....with a 6th maybe being the "kick shot"....hope this is close to right....would not count "the bank" as one....but maybe......hell I don't know those are my guess's!!
