LOL ok...your son is a 17 year old BOY...im sure he's already drank before. Most boys in my grade (10) got drunk when they were 12 for the first time.

HERES WHAT YOU NEED TO DO:
You need to teach him how to drink SAFELY, not to not drink at all. If you teach him not to drink at all, chances are as he is a teenager, he will anyways...and he might get into danger.

You need to explain to him how many drinks is safe to have without risk of alcohol poisoning, to get rides from cabs and to NEVER take a ride from a friend who's been drinking. You know, that sort of thing. Trust me. I listened to my mom when she told me these things, when she told me not to drink, I have to admit I went to parties and did anyways. Then my mom explained to me how to drink safely, I felt much better knowing she was supporting me, and that if I ever did get into trouble, I could call her for help without risk of being grounded or yelled at.

Because your sons getting older, and drinking is a part of life. Drinking can be fun if you keep it light and social, not to get rid of pain or anything. Thats when it turns dangerous. You also need to teach him the social aspects of drinking, which is something everyone does...at dinner parties, clubs, etc., to the bad aspects of drinking, which is abusing alcohol. So basically, use vs. abuse.

Also, dont make drinking seem like a big bad thing, it will only make him want to do it more because it seems rebellious and exciting.

I would think at his age he's already seen friends or someone drunk and out of control. Parents should be explaining alcohol to children when they're 11 or 12, as they start drinking, many times, at that age. Take him to a MADD meeting. (Mother's against drunk driving).

Get all Urban Anthropologist with him. In neighborhoods full of dive bars, point out the unhealthy look of regulars coming into convenience stores etc. Make a game of it: "Spot the Boozer."

sometimes teens are hard to control but by giving them a good example might help...maybe you can use some cases that a victim of alcohol suffered severly because of too much intake of alcohol but do not be too scary to think about, your son might think you are exagerating. also, try to explain the effect of alcohol in our bodies...hope this one helps...

Take him to the police station and have then
show him the videos they have of car accidents
because of alcohol.
I am sure they would be willing to help save a life.

I have seen them on talk shows and they are not pleasant to watch.
