Is it wrong for parent(s) to pick their childs future career, because they are paying for the education. If the child does not want to be what the parent says because the parents think the child cant be anything else. And how would you get out of that with your parents being not really understanding and easily angered.

Touchy question because it hits on a lot of issues. Yes it's wrong for parents to pick a career and force a child who doesn't want to do that career into it. But, the parents also have no obligation to provide money for education beyond high school.

So, assuming you are the child you have to balance out what you're willing to do to get that money if they decide to be tough on the issue. I would think your best bet to get them to give you some leeway is to research the career you want, lay out your educational plan and show them how you're going to achieve it.

Is it wrong for a parent to choose their child’s career? Yes. BUT if they are paying for your education, then they have the right to have input/voice their opposition. I assume they object to your chosen field because they feel it’s impractical/not a field in which you will be successful (for whatever reason)/a field in which you will not be able to earn a decent living/etc. And they can cut off the funds.

The solution? Pay for your own education. Many people do it (including myself).

Yes, it is wrong. People need to learn to live up to their own standards and do what they enjoy doing. 9 of 10 college grads don't even work in the field that they graduate in. I'm an English major and I work in Interior Design!

Its not wrong, but parents should understand that their children like the career they choose for them.

Of course it is wrong. Those parents need career counselling themselves. They cannot try to be what they wanted to be through their kids. But again, it also depends on what you want to be - it could be 'immoral' or something.

Get a scholarship or job and pay for your own education. If you can't reason with them and you are positive they are wrong, I don't see any other way.

yes. i think so. me being 18 and in college about to persue my profession that i chose. i wouldnt want my mom to decide what i spent the rest of my life doing. and i want to enjoy what i do. what if you pick ot something that your child wont like. just think about what s/he wants and how happy they'll be doing it.
