I bet it's oxidized, I've seen pitting of the brass and such from salt water air (we used to live on the water). I suggest trying to remove the lump through vigorous cleaning - purchase some stuff made for brass and made to remove "deposits" (could be mineral build up from the air).
If that fails -THEN look into buying a new one or live with it. If you get brass again you're liable to have the same thing happen down the line if it was environmental to begin with. If it wasn't, make sure you buy a superior product with a good "coating" to protect the brass.
Good Luck

I suggest seeing a specialist. Warts on door knobs are difficult to get rid of and are often contagious!!!!!

how old is it and do you know where it came from? i would check with the local lumber yard and see if they can determine the manufacturer and find out what kind of warrantied there may be if any. they most likely can order you a new one if its not under warranty
