He asked me out for dinner. I told him yes I will, but we are going out only as friends. He said 'I understand. Thanks for letting me know'. We went out for coffee right after that and we talked so much that we forgot about settling when to have dinner.

He asked me the current status of our relationships and I told him let's be friends because I don't want relationships based on lust alone.

But I want him like crazy! I just want to be friends first.

Will he think that I only want to be friends?

What should I do if he has misunderstood that I really only want to be friends?

Yes, he will move on. You should have been open from the beginning. I don't understand your thinking on starting out as friends because you don't want it based on "lust"...are you going to wait for the lust to wear off before you start dating him? Maybe by the lust statement you mean you don't want to sleep with him yet or you don't want a relationship based on sex?

Out of experience: Go for it.
Me and my guy where al about lust at first as well, but now we are together for almost a year.
Let me put it this way: A relationship is a combination of 3 things.
1.trust
2.friendship
3.love
If you have two of this 3 thing in your relationship at this moment the 3rd will follow.
The thing is, if I didn’t give this guy a chance with just our lust, friendship and trust we had in the beginning, we would not have the love we have for each other now. Things are going just great for us. So why not try it?
