I have a 1 year old female cockatiel that loves cheese. I do know it is important for them to have calcium in their diet. She has cuttle bones and I do try to introduce her to all kinds of fruits and veggies. She does not like veggies and eats little bits of fruit but cheese is her favorite. What I want to know is if dairy products are good for her. She is a picky eater. I do only feed her cheese in small quantities but I cannot take it out of my fridge without her right there trying to eat some.

All things in moderation. A bit of cheese as a treat isn't going to cause your bird harm. But be careful not to overdo it! It's not something that she should have frequently or in large quantities. Keep persevering with her as far as veggies go! She needs those a lot more than she needs the cheese. I can't open the margarine at my house without my Lorikeet wanting to dive head first into the container!!! He just loves the stuff!! I hate telling him no, but it's in his best interest even if he doesn't know it. He's allowed a small bite of my buttered toast (whole grain) and that's it!

The harder cheeses like cheddar are okay every once in a while, not every day. They contain the least ammount of lactose.

Birds have a hard time with lactose, so make sure that the treat is always in moderation.

That said, my three cockatiels love cheese whenever they can get it!

Keep trying with the veggies. Let her see you eating them and she will take to them better. Just remember to keep the portions cut small so she isn't scared of them.

I give all veggies on a plate to my birds. They think it is a treat because it comes on a plate like human food is presented. I can't keep them away from it!

They like cooked brown rice as well. If you cook it in chicken broth it will give them a little more protein as well.

It's not good for your cockateel to give it cheese products.
There is a special kind of eggfood which is especially for cockateels. Mine don't eat that eggfood when it's in sepatate food baskets so I started mixing it into the normal seeds and now they do eat it.
I have the same problem about fruit and vegetables. they do like apple however so I now give them a piece of apple every day.

one piece is ok,but only once in a while.dont do it every day as it would not be good for your bird. i have 2 african greys and give them cheeseabout once a month. i ask the vet. she said that was ok, but no more than that.

No...birds have a very hard time digesting anything with dairy in it....they are lactose intolerant, and it will make them very sick if not kill them.

I read that you are not suppose to give your birds any kind of dairy.
