The following are two great acupressue techniques for sore necks. While you can do this to yourself, if you can get someone to do it to you, it will be easier for you to relax:
Firmly grasp the meaty part of the back of your neck using the palm of your hand and the flat surfaces of your fingers (i.e., NOT the tips). Hold this grip for about a minute.
Then using the same technique grip the meaty muscles going down from both sides of the neck to your shoulder (called the trapezius). Again hold each side for a minute.

You slept on it wrong. I read you are supposed to ditch the pillow and wear a neck brace. You can make a neck brace out of a bath towel. Fold it the width of your neck and wrap it around so that it looks like a neck brace. It supposedly works, according to this book I have about self care.
You can also try applying one of those thermawraps you can buy in the store. There are variations of the same idea for less as well. Those help a lot.
Whatever you decide to do, it should go away gradually. Maybe a few days from when the pain started it should be completely gone. Good luck, we all know what a pain in the neck a pain in the neck is!

Ok here is what you can do:
Treat with ice, if you do not have an ice pack use a frozen bag of peas or corn
Take an anti inflammatory such as Ibuprofen.
See a chiropractor, they are miracle workers with injuries to the neck and spine.
When there is a soft tissue injury the blood automatically goes to the injured area because it is its job to fix the injured area, at least that is what it thinks. In actuality what it does is causes inflammation. You can actually feel the heat from the blood in that area compared to the rest of the body. So when you put the ice on it the blood says oh man that is cold I am out of here sorry about your luck. That promotes healing. So treat with ice 20 minutes on 20 off. then after about 72 hours you can alternate with heat and ice. Good luck

I had the exact same thing 2 days ago! Woke up fine, then halfway during my lesson, I couldn't even lift my head! To the point where I was miserable the whole day, moaning everytime I had to lift my head or to tuen my head to the right.
So I asked my friend to massage my neck a little, the first one massaged extremely mildly, which relieved it a little. Then a second friend really pressed his hand into the my neck, kneading and pressing. And surprisingly- the pain disappeared after awhile!
I think you should ask someone to massage it a little, it will definitely help.

See a chinese massage person or a physiotherapist.
don't rely on the stupid answers you get here for a diagnosis on something these people have never seen.
Other things (to go against what I just said):
- get a good latex pillow
- put a nice warm towel around your neck (fill a basin with very hot water and shove a towel in and wring it out) and turn it gently from side to side
*see someone professionally - this is your neck not your little toe... it is important.

Its probably due to sleeping in a wrong position, u try out this exercise (I do this when i suffer such things, it works for me atleast)
turn ur head right, then left as much as possible, then up and down, repeat 4-5 times, repeat the exercise atleast thrice a day.
Also apply pain relief balm to the area its paining and give a soft massage. it should probably go away within 2 days

This happens to me, I go to the chiropractor and ice it 20 minutes on 4 times a day. Also, stretch it out, and with your knuckles work the area as to work out the pain.
works for me

Have you had any trauma lately? Car wreck, fall, sumo wrestling? If so you might wanna go see your doctor, and try not to move your neck that much. If not then you prob just slept on it wrong.
