Hi there,
My mum suffers from high blood pressure, and has been advised to stay away from foods containing high levels of salt.. Can anyone advise what sort of things would be good for her to eat, bearing in mind she's always on the go, and won't have time to cook big meals. I've tried looking in supermarkets, but all I can find are gluten free foods. Any advice would be appreciated!

A lot of supermarkets and food manufacturers now include an area on their food labelling saying how much salt, caoleries, sugar, fat and saturates are included - this is clearly visable.

Fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats and dairy. Whole grains (cereal and whole wheat bread) Stay away from processed meats (like sausage, ham and bacon, condiments such as ketchup, soy sauce, pickles) There are a lot of soups with very high sodium but they have lower sodium varities now. Check on the web for low sodium foods, they will give you a detailed list. And when you're shopping, just check the labels to see how much sodium there is per serving and how much your mum is allowed.

My mom has hypertension, so high blood pressure as well.
A couple of tips:
- don't buy canned food, they contain lots of salt and sugar
- make your own soup, don't buy it (= salt hell!)
- eat lots of veggies
- avoid meat/fish if you can and want to, if not, eat chicken and trout or salmon
- try to make your own bread (again, premade bread has lots of salt in it)
- make your own jam, it'll taste better and contain less sugar
- exercise regurarly
- visit your doctor frequently
- avoid sugary/alcoholic drinks, plain water or tap water is best
- cook your own potatoes, and make sure they aren't sweet potatoes, those are no good at all, but don't eat too much potatoes anyway
- candy is basically a no-no, especially if it contains chocolate
- don't drink coffee or tea, coke, etc. - anything that contains cafeine basically

That's about it. Hope this helps.

In the 80's, my grandmom was told she had high blood pressure. She was severely obese and clearly had to loose weight too. Her doctor gave her a list of foods that she could eat, he also gave her another list with recipes on it. Within the first year, she had dropped 75 pounds and her blood pressure went down. Good luck to your mom.

look at the nutrition facts label on the back of the product and check for sodium levels sometimes foods claiming low in sodium are not. there are all kinds of things out on the market now that are sodium free. also if she likes salty food get her some No-salt. it is pottassium chloride not sodium chloride. and has the same salty taste.

fresh food is best....canned, processed and frozen are loaded with salt....if you have healthy choice, they are usually lower in sodium.....yogurt, fresh fruits and veggies, chicken.....
