It all depends on what's in the water making it so nasty! I lived in an area where the water was so hard it was like a glass of liquid cement! I chose bottled water just to avoid any unwanted clogs!
To each their own! Whatever floats your boat! If you like and can afford bottled water-have at it! Just research and make sure you know what you are buying! Once the fad took holt, good old corporate America jumped the band wagon selling everything from spring water to recycled sewage treatment water! Consumer beware comes to mind???????????????????

For cooking, I would suggest tap water, as any contaminants would be killed and antisepticized by the heat. For drinking, bottled water is a great idea; just make sure that the bottled water is FRESH water - some companies simply put tap water in a bottle and call it bottled water. It should say on the bottle whether it's tap or not.

Bottled water is safe to drink - just make sure that you do not share the bottle while drinking from it and make sure that the cap has not been tampered with before you open it.
A Brita filter is also good, but very expensive.
My mother and I just boil all our drinking water, cool and then drink as necessary. This does make a difference and is a heck of a lot cheaper than all these new fangled things. Unless you are mega rich, I would just go with boiling.

I have a Brita water pitcher that I use for everything. Sometimes I buy Fiji water, but then I refill the bottle with the Brita pitcher.

In America bottled water is a scam. Much of it is just tap water. It is no better or safer for you than tap water, and is more expensive than gasoline. You can filter tap water to change the taste, if you must, but American corporations have done one more gotcha to the American people and convinced them that they need it when in fact it is no better or worse than what comes out of the tap.

IN MY SUGGESTION, I WILL BUY A PURIFIER AND PLUG IT IN MY HOME FAUCET, IF NASTY WATER OR DIRTY WATER GO THROUGH THE PURIFIER, WATER COME OUT FROM THE PURIFIER WILL SURELY CLEAN, THEN, I WILL BOIL THE WATER, LET COOL & PUT IT IN THE CLEAN BOTTLE FOR ME & MY FAMILY TO USE IT, IN THIS WAY I CAN SAVE SOME MONEY AND SURELY DRINK CLEAN WATER. BEWARE NOT ALL BOTTLED WATER ARE CLEAN AND SAFE.
