i think it doesn't matter. because sit-ups are supposed to be an exercise for your tummy. So it doesn't matter where you do it.

Although on the second thought it does, actually. Because if you do it on the floor, it makes your back hurt, and your bones give a cracking sound. And if you do it on some soft surface, you save yourself all the pain.

doing situps on the floor is more effective versus a matress or a soft surface but i would say that both are ok try the ab lounge it really does work and it doesnt give you the pains and aches the floor gives you

For true results you have to do them on surfaces like that floor or carpet, though during actual tests, people do sit ups on hard mattresses. Doing it on a couch will make it much easier, so I'd suggest you do them on hard gym mattresses

They are actually more difficult to do them on a soft surface. There is more shock absorbed so you dont have much to push against. But you can do it on a soft surface if you feel so inclined.

I think it's best to do them on the floor, but if you have back problems you can get one of those inflatable exercise balls and do sit ups on that. The bonus to the ball is that it supports your back and also strengthens your legs and core because you have to balance yourself while your doing the sit ups.
