You do know that the inventor of the Atkins Diet died of a heart attack right? Pretty ironic.

The Atkins diet is a diet based off of eating less carbs to make your body go into a process called 'ketosis' so your body burns fat.

I think that is how it basically works, I read the book a few years ago and that's what I got out of it.

There is three or four stages. The first two weeks are severaly strict about the amount of carbs consumed per day, I Don't remember the exact number, but it limits pretty much every food on the food pyramid besides some veggies, chicken, steak, cheese, and peanut butter, and even those are limited as well. You cannot eat any sweets, cake, bread, cereal, milk, anything... and after those two weeks, then you are in 'ketosis' or if you aren't you continue eating just those protein packed foods.

After that you go into the second stage, and I believe you are allowed to consume more than 20 g of carbs a day, but I'm not exactly sure on all the details.

But here's what I Think about the atkins diet:
It doesn't look into the fact that you are consuming a large amount of saturated fat, which can harm your arteries and cause major health problems, and not enough 'good' carbs. Your body NEEDS carbs to survive. Atkins notices this, but does not put enough stress on how much they really effect performance, brain activity, and overall mood.

It also eliminates fruits, so the body does not receive essential vitamins and nutrients that boost immunity and help perform functions of the body.

my opinion:
I was on the diet four days and quit because I couldn't walk up the stairs. I was 17 at the time, and it just was horrible for me, but I have heard that atkins works for many people, but for most it is a horrible diet that no one should suffer through.

It's up to you. For two weeks stay under 20 g of carbs, and if you can handle it, buy the book and read on what to do next.

Good luck with your decision.

DR ATKINS DID NOT, I REPEAT DID NOT DIE FROM A HEART ATTACK OR FROM HIS DIET!

This site will take you thru all the phases of Atkins
http://www.atkins.com/articles/atkins-phases

It is NOT NO carbs! During the Induction phase you eat 20 grams a day, mostly from veggies. It is NOT all protein. Actually you aim for more fat. Fat is NOT bad for you. Fat does not cause heart attacks and heart disease. It is SUGAR that does this.

Lizzie you contradicted yourself. You said Atkins is bad but just said to do pretty much what Atkins is about. This shows how uninformed people really are.

Hi,

I specialize in helping people lose weight quickly and healthily and i myself lost 15kg within 2 mths via a detox.

I have also helped people lose a total of 500kg in the past few years via detox.

My understanding about Atkins is that it is a all protien and protein only type of diet. This type of diet will allow you to see very fast results. However, it is an imbalanced diet and when you do take back the carbo, you are likely to put on weight. Also, this sort of diet is not very good for the heart...

A safer and more effective way could be a detox...

And the detox is simple. All you need to do is three things.

Number one, follow the detox programme which requires you to change your diet a little bit. Eg, take more vege and less meat and seafoods.

Number two, use 1 minute a day to take some natural health foods that I take to enhance the speed and the effect of the detox.

Number three, drink lots of water to flush the toxins out and help your body start to accept water and work out on your treadmill and stairclimber.

And that's it.

The rest is up to you.

So what do you think? ;)

i read "protein power" by drs. eads.. basically the same stuff though. informative book.

basically you eat almost no carbs, perhaps around 100g a day. use that 100g to consume green and colorful vegetables. you can subtract dietary fiber from your carb grams (as well as hard liquor if you need it).

the diet is useful to eliminate carbohydrate addiction. not sure if that's an addiction you want to kill or not.

the person below says 20g - i'd say my 100g guess is too high.

Very bad diet, not good for anyone. It is good to have carbs as long as they are good ones, for example. brown rice, Wholemeal pasta, sweet potatoe, oats. Just balance your meals and eat protein, fats and carbs together just limit the carbs in the evening and stick to vegetables. the adkins diet is bad for your body and have never met anyone who thinks it is successful.
