I am looking to start studing Environmental Science, and if anyone can point me in the right direction for a relevant, current book, that would be great!

The problem with what you're asking is that books take a year to write then about another year before they hit the shelves. In that time, lots of things can change, for better or worse!

If you're wanting some seriously up-to-date information, I'd suggest doing some internet-based research as there's a lot less time lag between the scientific research and publication!

There's also a couple of films that would be worth watching as well, chief amongst these being the Academy - award winning documentary from Al Gore called "An Inconvenient Truth".

If you want a pretty good overview of the current state of play, try the big environment groups as your first port of call. The Wilderness Society, The Australian Conservation Foundation, World Wildlife Fund (although these guys sometimes get it very wrong!) and The Greens for some practical, politically-based solutions. You could try CSIRO as well - they're the Government's science and research organisation. There are a number of United Nations departments devoted to environmental research too, like the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, or IUCN. They publish the most globally-based and up-to-date information on Endangered Species, via their "Red Book". The Australian links come with the facts that the IUCN are the overseers of all our World Heritage Sites and that there are a lot of Australian species listed in the Red Book.

I would also suggest that you go to your local Environment Centre. They are usually a wealth of information on your local area, but be warned, they are (more often than not) staffed by volunteers who either have an area of speciality (say, current local water issues or what's going on with the forest that they're interested in) or will know nothing at all! So, be ready with a specific question and if you don't get a straight answer, ask when their next meeting will be. Go to that and ask around when there's a fair few members in the one place!

If you're still keen to get hold of a hard copy book, I'd suggest trying your local University's Co-op Bookshop. They will have the current texts that are recommended and compulsory reading for the course you're considering. You could also go and see the head of the Environmental Science school at the same Uni and ask that person for a list of texts. Make an appointment because they're usually flat out at this time of year, as it is the beginning of the semester!

Finally, there's always your local bookshop, www.amazon.com and www.barnesandnoble.com

Hope this helps!

Love and Light,

Jarrah
(btw...feel free to email me if you want any more info...like where your enviro centre might be etc.)
