some bloke with a beard in the sky sitting there waiting to smite us all?

Before you all jump on my head, I DON'T see God that way, and I didn't think anyone else over the age of 5 did either... but recently, I have just met a lot of otherwise sensible who think of God in this way.

What is that about? I thought it was a metaphor... I've always thought that.

It's our intense need to have a picture to go with the words. To put things another way, we insist on fabricating an image to gratify our desire for a less-abstract/more-concrete subject of worship. Whether that image is correct or not is an entirely different matter.

I see 'God' as a spiritual being that encompasses all of the purest parts of mankinds consciousness, you know, the rushing to help someone in immediate danger regardless of what happens to you (we do it naturally, without even thinking about it), and part which doesn't judge or discriminate against others, the part that wants the best for everybody else.

We get selfish and egotistical though, and start having wrong views.. so that the 'knowledge' that most of us have is delusion, and we are so headstrong we like to convince ourselves that it is the truth. God binds the universe and is beyond such petty things as 'good' and 'evil'.

I wish people who call themselves christians would take a step back and actually ~try~ to be like Jesus, this great perfect being, as everything is possible with determination and love..Rather than just trying to pass the blame to Satan, try to eradicate your own sins.

Well it says in the bible that god created man in his own image. If you believe in the bible then you should really believe that god looks just like one of us...

Just checked out Genesis: it says: "Then God said, 'Let us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth..." (Genesis 1:26).

It says 'Our image'...OUR, not 'my'... was there more than one god? Did god create the earth after a night out on the piss with his god mates? No wonder we haven't heard a squeak from him since...he had such a hangover he forgot about us!

''God'' is an old bloke sitting on a throne looking down at the world and laughing his @rse off. God is also an idea thought up by man.

There called non-believers. God says there will be more non-believers than believers when Christ returns.
