The absolute last word that I had on this subject came yesterday in a newsletter that I get on a regular basis that is the absolute law book on insider stuff on the workings of the internet and the companies that are the heavy hitters here---
Word is that Microsoft has gone on record saying that they would support and keep XP in the loop for the absolute "forseeable future" because of its popularity and user loyalty--- which the newsletter critics are saying means at least another five or six years !!
I'm glad of this myself for I do not intend to leave XP until they have a SP2 on the market for Vista--- until then , I consider the dog a BETA OS and will stand by for all of the curve-surfers and edge-seekers to Geek out all of the bugs !!!!

Windows XP Professional
December 31, 2001 < Date of General Availability
January 29, 2008 < OEM/Retail License Availability (end date)
January 29, 2009 < System Builder License Availability (end date)
Mainstream support ends 4/14/2009
Extended Support ends 4/8/2014 (paid support $$$$)
The next service pack for Windows XP is planned for 2008, no date has been set. XP XP1 is no longer supported by Microsoft, you have to be at SP2 to get any support.
You will not be able to get a system pre-built with XP after Jan 29, 2009. Most system builders will drop support way before that and go with Vista only.
