The Quran says it's allowed, but it's for when most men are dead in war and women can't support themselves. The Quran even goes so far as to say it's allowed, but it's better to have one because it's the nature of man to be incapable of being fair and just even to the one.

From what i remember of the qu'ran , it was permissable to have four wives, not promoted.
But one must remember that during the time of the prophet, it was common for men to have more wives than that, and also to have slave girls as concubines.
These days it is rarely practiced and unlawful even in some muslim majority countries.
The original intent of the law was to ensure that the wives and children of men killed in battle etc were to be looked after by others financially capable of doing so, since the surah it is stated in was recited shortly after a major battle between the meccans and the medinans.
on the lighter side, can you imagine being married to four women with PMS.

Man, This don't need a Muslim, this Needs Superman...
Islam Retricts this right to very limited cases, Men can only marry another wife - Till 4 in the following cases:
1- Women that lost their Hasbands during war, and have no supporter;
2- If a man can be fair between them. This is an impossible clause, I can't be fair to 2 or more women and I can't abide doing house chores 4 times :D.. Plus.. God stated that this ability to be fair is only for very few men in this world.. Like prophets and the like, not to any one...
Man, we can't be fair to ONLY 1 wife today, she does everything, raise the kids, and prevent them from destroying the house and chase them everywhere; while A man is sitting in an air conidtioned room on a PC, (this is work) having and hot drink, Then comes home exhausetd!
Muhammad said:
"If a man liked something in another woman than his wife; he must tell his wife to fix that in her"...
Brother, If I married this for being blonde, and tried this for being black, I'll transform into a Semen Horse, not a Human.. This is our religion. in case of war to protect the community and support those who have nothing on them, and in other times; in case we are fair enough...
I wrote too much; you understood anything?

God is all wisdom, he didn't tell us this for nothing. look how many widows, divorce, women, girls are going around in bar single. and there are women are taking advantage by men anyway without a Law to protect her. but Islam has made her a wife with Law, rules and rights.
a man has to be fair with all his wife, if he bought this one a car, the 2nd one should recieve a car as well. and in the Quran God command muslims that if u fear that u can't be fair with them, then Marry only ONE.

Yes you can but only if you can afford them financially. Seconly, you have must have permission from each wife to marry another. If you do so you must provide equal justice. equal love and equal financial assitance. It is not mandatory. it is practised more in the Arab world because they can afford it and their population is less. I am muslim and come from Pakistan. We do not have four wives over there.

as long as he is capable of dealing wid em juslty and equally. plus it shud be also 2 provide shelter and help widowed or divorced women who hve no one 2 take care of them nor can they luk after themselves. if the guy thinks he may not be able 2 treat them fairly and equally then the quran says tht its better 2 hve one wife.
marrying 4 times is an exception not a rule.

My idea is that having 4 wives is not good idea...
4 times expenses..
4 times responsibilities...
4 times kids...
4 times lesser value of women in society compared to men
4 times lesser women available for marriage
and finally
4 times tension...
why won't someone like to share some of that with other fellow beings..

Four is just as arbitrary a number as one. The only problem, as far as I can see, is that men are allowed more partners than women are.

well it's not my culture or religion, so for me to judge well is pretty damn awful. i certainly wouldn't wish it for myself, but then the real fact is, what one is more natural and the answer to that is i don't know. for me obviously the one i know, but that doesn't make it the one that should prevail. i would have to say in this case, each to their own
