This is really getting bad. My kitten is somewhat of a needy baby and when I'm at the computer he will attempt to crawl up my leg. Since he had success when I was in jeans he now tries this on bare legs! ouch! he makes me bleed and I grab his paw and say no sternly but he'll just do it again. Do you really think I should spray water? Will he eventually learn? Because right now he is peaceful and happily purring to have gotten into my lap, but when he gets desperate and needy to be "up" he'll just lash out.... And yes I play with him regularly so he's not starved for attention.

Lol,we have six cats so we know what you mean. Cats are smart but not that smart.Be prepared for him (wear pants, cover your legs) cause he's just trying to be near his favorite human.

We have four cats and they range in age from a 9 year old female...two 6 year old sisters and a not yet 2 year old male.
They all still...from time to time..do exactly what you describe.
It did get better as they got older.
I'm sure that jeans and a bare leg feel different to them, but if they want up they want up and they don't really care how they get there.

We've never been able to completely break them of this, but we clap our hands and say "NO" very firmly and loudly...they then stop clawing to get up and we them pick them up and put them on our laps.

To answer your other question, NO spraying a cat or kitten with water is NEVER a good idea according to our Vet.
He said if the cat or kitten would get sprayed in the face this could cause an over abundance of yeast to develop in their eyes, ears or nose which would result in a trip to the Vet to get medication.
Also over time the cat or kitten will associate the spray bottle with you and not the bad behavior and that will cause trust issues over time resulting in an even bigger problem

I don't have cats.

I have a dog...he also likes my leg.

If you don't want to put pants on in the house I see two real choices here...invite me over, and I'll keep him off your leg...or...you could fill a hot water bottle, wrap it in a towel with a wind up clock and some cat nip...and lock him in another room for an hour or so...

orrr
I dunno...what about rolling up a newspaper and swatting him when he climbs up a bare leg???
sorry
It works on the dog...
sometimes.

Personally...I'd wear pants...carry the kitten around...
cats are so independant eventually, he'll grow to want to be off on his own.

Good luck.

because cats don't wear clothes and so do not recognise clothing on us. If you let them attack your legs with pants on, they will attack without pants.
